Simple Past Tense - Verb «to be»
• To be ( was, were) OLUMLU YAPI /
AFFIRMATIVE

«To be» de bir fiildir ve «olmak» anlamına


gelmektedir. Bu fiilin geçmiş zaman  hali
ise,

• am, is--------was
are-----------were   şeklindedir.
• NOT: «be» fiilinin geçmiş zamanda
kullanımı «was» ve «were» ile olur.

• I, He, She, It veya tekil isimler ile was,

• You, We, They veya çoğul isimler ile


 were kullanılır.
Using the verb «to be» in the
Simple Past Tense:

• Affirmative (+) :  Subject + TO BE (was/were ) +…
• Negative (-) : Subject + TO BE (was/were ) + NOT +

• Interrogative (?) : TO BE ( was/were ) + Subject + …
• Negative Questions (?) : TO BE (was/were ) + NOT +
Subject + …
• Short Answers: ( + / – ) : YES / NO + Subject + TO
BE ( was/were ) or TO BE (was/were ) + NOT
Positive with «be»

• I was cold.
• You were tired.
• He was in the garden.
• She was late.
• It was sunny.
• We were on holiday.
• They were hungry.
To make negative with «be»,
just add «not»:
Negative with «be» Negative Short Form
• I was not sleepy. I wasn't sleepy.
• You were not on the bus. You weren't on the bus.
• He was not at school. He wasn't at school.
• She was not beautiful. She wasn't beautiful.
• It was not cold. It wasn't cold.
• We were not at work. We weren't at work.
• They were not tired. They weren't tired.
• To make a question, just like the present
simple, we change the position of «was /
were» and the subject.
• Here are the past simple «yes / no»
questions with «be»:
«Yes / No» Questions & Short Answers with «be»

• Was I sleepy? *Yes, you were. / No, you weren’t.


• Were you late? * Yes, I was. / No, I wasn’t.
• Was he at the cinema? * Yes, he was. / No, he wasn’t.
• Was she kind? * Yes, she was. / No, she wasn’t.
• Was it hot? * Yes, it was. / No, it wasn’t.
• Were we hungry? * Yes, you were. / No, you weren’t.
• Were they at work? * Yes, they were. / No, they weren’t.
And the «wh» questions with «be» (The question word
just goes at the beginning and everything else is the same):

• When was he at the cinema?
• How was she?
• How was it?
• Why were we hungry?
• When were they at work?

Geçmiş Zaman Kullanımlarıyla Örnekler

• He was married for 20 years.(20 yıldır evliydi.)


• We were busy all day. (Tüm gün meşguldük.)
• You were at fault! (Sen suçluydun!)
Uyarı
• «You» tekil bir zamir olarak «sen» anlamında
kullanılsa bile daima «were» ile birlikte
kullanılmalıdır. Yani «you was» gibi bir kullanım
asla yoktur.

• Geçmiş zaman ile birlikte kullanılan zaman
zarfları şunlardır:
Yesterday: Dün
Last week / month / year: Geçen hafta / ay / yıl
Two days / three years / a month ago: 2 gün / 3
yıl / 1 ay önce

In the past: Geçmişte
The day before yesterday: Dünden önceki gün
