Plate Boundaries

This document discusses different types of plate boundaries including convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries. It defines each boundary type and provides examples. Convergent boundaries occur when two plates move towards each other and include oceanic-oceanic, continental-continental, and oceanic-continental convergence. Divergent boundaries form when two plates move apart, creating rift valleys and mid-ocean ridges. Transform boundaries occur when two plates slide past one another horizontally, such as at the San Andreas Fault.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS

•What is a plate boundary?

•What are the different types of plate
boundaries,
•How moving plates form rift
valleys, mountain ranges, and
volcanoes, and;
•How to locate the different plate
boundaries on earth.
TYPES OF PLATE BOUNDARIES
PLATE BOUNDARY

 the border between

two tectonic plates
CONVERGENT BOUNDARY
 When two plates move
toward to each other.

Subduction
SUBDUCTION
 “subducere”- to draw away from
below
 process where a portion of tectonic
plates are diving beneath other
plates that can form a region called
“Subduction Zone”
EXAMPLE
 Mt. St. Helens- Juan de Fuca plate goes
under the North American Plate.
THREE TYPES OF
CONVERGENT
BOUNDARY
1. Oceanic-Oceanic Convergence
2. Continental-Continental
Convergence
3. Oceanic-Continental Convergence
CONVERGENT
(OCEANIC-OCEANIC)
BOUNDARY
• it occurs when two oceanic plates
meet and one oceanic plates pushed
underneath the other.
•It forms building of arcs of volcanic
island such as Japanese And Philippine
island
CONVERGENT
(CONTINENTAL-CONTINENTAL)
BOUNDARY
•The two plates have the same
density, they buckle up and move
to a higher elevation.
• It form Mountain Ranges Such as
Himalayas Range
CONVERGENT
(OCEANIC-CONTINENTAL)
BOUNDARY
•When an oceanic plates collide
with a continental plate.
• It forms mountain ranges and
Volcanic island as well.
• Trenches (ex. Atacama Trench
& Mariana Trench)
DIVERGENT BOUNDARY
 When two plates move apart.
 Features:
In continents:
 Rift Valley, Volcanoes, Earthquakes

In oceans:
 Mid-Ocean Ridge, Volcanoes, Earthquakes
 It form new ocean floor
and oceanic crust
EXAMPLES:
 Great Rift Valley, Africa
 Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Atlantic Ocean
EXAMPLE: GREAT RIFT VALLEY,
AFRICA
SLIDING/TRANSFORM
BOUNDARY
 When two plates slide past each other.
 Features: Earthquakes
EXAMPLE:
California- Pacific Plate
slides past the North
American Plate at the
San Andreas Fault.

KNOW YOUR
BOUNDARIES: IDENTIFY THE
FOLLOWING STATEMENTS IF IT
IS CONVERGENT, DIVERGENT
AND TRANSFORM.
 1. It occurs when two plates are
pushing toward each other

 2. Where two lithospheric plates

move apart from each other

 3. This boundary marked by a mid-

oceanic ridge which is a
characteristic of oceanic-spreading
center responsible for seafloor
spreading.
 4. This mechanisms build the
earth’s great mountain ranges
including the Himalayas Mountain.

 5. An example of this is Great Rift

Valley in East Africa.

 6. It moves the plate in an opposite

direction.
 7. This type of boundary causes
significant earthquakes.
 8. This type of mechanism does not
allow molten material escape
upward. Therefore, it causes no
volcanism.
 9. It originated from the segment of
the Phillipinne Fault such as west
valley fault
 10. It forms different trenches such
as Marianas Trench
