Description of the technology

What are iPads?

An iPad is a computer tablet that was developed by Apple. The iPads

these days are mostly or entirely touch screen, incorporating a bigger
screen than a mobile phone but smaller and more compact than your
average laptop. iPads interface is more similar to a mobile phone, which
features WiFi connectivity and applications.

iPads can take pictures, record audio/video, play music and conduct
internet functions such as emailing and web-browsing.

In the classroom, iPads have been used as a tool for learning; such as
creating eBooks, practice reading/writing and increasing student’s
engagements.
Pros of using iPads

● Compact and easy to carry

around (Tirado-Morueta et al.,
2019).
● Provides a variety of different
academic/learning applications
(Vaughan & Beers, 2016).
● Provides sensory stimulation
through video and audio effects
that can increase motivation and
engagement (Clarke & Abbott,
2016).
● Documenting student’s work
(Encheff, 2013).
○ Being able to share
student’s work to their
peers, families and
themselves.
Cons of using iPads
● Expensive (Fantozzi,
Johnson & Scherfen, 2017).
○ Very costly to provide
all students with an
iPad
● Management (Clarke &
Abbott, 2016, pp. 1058-1059)
● Students can use it
recreationally instead of for
learning purposes (Encheff,
2013).
● Potentially distract students
from other types of
play/learning (Fantozzi,
Johnson & Scherfen, 2017).
