INTRODUCTION

A sentence pattern is an arrangement of words.

This arrangement needs to be in a

grammatically correct structure.

It means the placement of verbs and nouns

should be correct to form a meaningful sentence.

In order to make your sentences meaningful

and effective, you will have to learn how to speak
and write correct sentences using different
patterns.
Basic Sentence Patterns

S-IV Pattern S-TV-O Pattern S-LV-C Pattern

S stands for subject. S stands for subject.

S stands for subject.
TV stands for LV stands for linking
transitive verb. verb.
IV stands for
intransitive verb. O stands for object. C stands for
complement that
describes it.
Frame 1: S-IV Pattern
The intransitive verb (IV) asserts something about the subject and
does not need an object to complete its meaning.

S IV

Examples S S IV

Frame 2: S-TV-O Pattern

receives the action indicated by the verb.

Examples S LV C

adjective

The complement is also called the subjective complement.

Frame 3: S-LV-C Pattern
The common linking verbs are made up of all the forms of the
verbs to be (is, are , was, were) plus look, feel, taste, sound,
smell, seem, appear, get, become, grow, stay, keep, turn, prove,
go, remain, resemble, lie, and run.
