◦ The cultivation of grouper fish has also been promoted in Indonesia in addition to meeting domestic
needs, as well as an export commodity. Grouper fish from Indonesia are exported alive to Hong Kong,
Taiwan, China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, USA, Australia, Singapore,
Malaysia and France.
why grouper fish need to be developed as a
leading commodity in Indonesia, namely:
◦ Grouper is a fishery commodity that has very attractive export opportunities which have not been fully utilized. The growth
of the grouper business as a whole is expected to have an impact on increasing the State's foreign exchange and the welfare
of the lower classes of society who live with livelihoods in the fisheries sector. Modernizing grouper fishing and cultivation
will reduce the negative impact on the marine environment, especially damage to coral reefs.
◦ Natural and hybrid grouper fish that have been widely cultivated in Indonesia are: mouse / duck grouper, tiger grouper,
beautiful grouper (a cross between tiger and batik grouper), cantang grouper (a cross between tiger and kertang groupers).
Of the four types of grouper, cantang grouper and grouper are the most dominant cultivated. This is because both of them
have a relatively short cultivation period, so they are considered more profitable for grouper cultivators. The latest data
obtained from BPS shows that grouper production in 2013 was 113,368 tonnes, consisting of 13,464 tonnes from cultivation
and 99,904 tonnes of catch. Grouper exports in the same year reached US $ 19.8 million with a volume of 2,552 tons. And
of that amount, 90 percent were sent to Hong Kong. The average body weight of grouper fish exported is between 500-800
grams.
◦ Indonesian waters that have the potential to cultivate grouper fish in floating net cages include; Aceh, North Sumatra,
Lampung, Situbondo-East Java, Bali, Berau.
