A Push or Pull: Force and Motion Force

The yellow parachute will fall faster than the red parachute because: - The yellow parachute is heavier than the red parachute due to it having more material. - A heavier parachute has more mass which means it experiences a greater downward force from gravity. - Although both parachutes experience air resistance, the greater mass of the yellow parachute means it is harder to slow down. - Therefore, with more mass but similar air resistance, the heavier yellow parachute will have a greater downward acceleration and fall faster than the lighter red parachute.

Force And Motion

Force: a push or pull

It takes a force to put an object into motion.

Motion: change in position

start finish
Unit of Force = Newton (N)

The weight of a medium sized apple is about 1 Newton.

Force can be measured using a spring scale.
Force does not always cause motion.
(Balanced forces cancel each other out).
Balanced Forces: equal in size;
opposite in direction
Net Forces: (cause motion) resulting force
after all the forces on an object are added up

15 N 10 N
85 100
15N to the front
What is the net force?
What is the net force?
10 N to right
Can you think of any forces
applied on an object without
touching it?

Gravity as well as electrostatic and magnetic attraction and

repulsion provide real life examples of forces being exerted
by one object on another without them being in contact with
each other.
Weight: measure of the force of gravity
Unit of weight = Newton (N)

N
Mass amount of matter in an object

Mass is 63.5 kg.

Unit of Mass = g or kg
What is friction? P1.3 Drag Forces and
Friction
If you rub your hands together there is resistance to the
motion.
What do we call this force?
Friction

What causes it?

Even though your hands
look smooth, on a
microscopic level it is not,
so when your hands rub
together you get the
resistive force of friction.
P1.3 Drag Forces and Friction
Even the smoothest surfaces
provide friction.

Name and compare some

surfaces that are slippery, and
some that are non-slippery.

List features of the best

surfaces to slide on.
Think about friction in your
answers.
P1.3 Drag Forces and Friction
Sort the phrases into things that increase friction or drag, or things
that reduce friction or drag.
Increase Reduce
moving in liquid
lubrication moving in liquid lubrication
small cross-section

moving slow moving fast smooth surfaces

streamlined shape rough surfaces streamlined shape

large cross-section large cross-section moving slow
non-streamlined shape

P1.3 Drag Forces
and Friction
1) Copy and complete the sentences below:

The force of __FRICTION____________ acts between two solid surfaces in

contact that are sliding across each other. The surfaces are _____rough_____
and will grip each other. This is why you need to exert a ___force____ to make
something move. There are two drag forces: _____contact____ and ___non
contact__ . When a moving object is in contact with ___air/gas____ or
____water___ particles it has to push them out of the way.
(7 marks)

2) Suggest and explain a reason why brake blocks on a bicycle need to be

replaced from time to time : Brake pads of bicycle have to be
replaced quite often because they get worn out due to continuous
friction with the wheels of the bicycle.(2 marks)

2) Suggest and explain a reason why brake blocks on a bicycle need to be replaced from
time to time
The brake blocks become worn away because of friction between the surfaces

Extension:
Keep these things the same
the weight of the object beneath the parachute
- the area of the parachute
- the thickness of the material
Shoes for the job

There are many different types of shoes that can be

worn in sports.

What features do the soles have that make them

good for their particular sport?

Think about the surfaces the athletes play on.

What will fall faster an elephant
or a feather?
elephant

Elephant and feather without air Elephant and feather with air
resistance resistance
•When someone jumps out of a plane gravity pulls them towards the earth.
•Some air will push back but not enough to stop them.
•When a parachute is opened it increases the air resistance so net force id upwards.
This causes deceleration of the parachutist and he slows down.
Which parachute do you think will fall the
fastest, why?

Yellow, since its

Heavier
