Surface Computing: Presented by

Surface computing is an interface that replaces traditional GUI elements like keyboards and mice with direct interaction on a touch-sensitive screen. The screen can recognize actual objects using barcode tags and multiple touches simultaneously. It uses infrared cameras and light to sense objects and inputs from multiple users. Applications include instantly comparing products, sharing photos, and placing food orders. While expensive now, surface computing may become integrated into more environments in the future as the technology evolves.

What is Surface Computing?
• Surface computing is the term for the use of a specialized
computer GUI (Graphical User Interface) in which
traditional GUI elements are replaced by intuitive, everyday
objects. Instead of a keyboard and mouse, the user interacts
directly with a touch-sensitive screen.

• Typically the surface is a touch-sensitive screen, though other

surface types like non-flat three-dimensional objects have been
implemented as well.

• It was created by Microsoft and it is a computer with different

and unique feel. Surface Computer
• Able to recognize actual unique objects that have barcode (domino
tag).

• Now the applications on surface computer are designed only for

restaurants, hotels, retail and public entertainment venues.

• Will transform the way people shop, dine, entertain and live.

Domino Tag
Hardware Specifications
1. Screen: A large horizontal “ Multi-touch ” screen, The Surface can
recognize objects by reading coded “domino” tags.

2. Infrared: Surface uses a 850-nm light source.

3. CPU: Core 2 Duo processors 2GB of RAM, 256MB graphics card.

4. Projector: The Surface uses Display Light Projector (DLP).

How does Screen and Infrared work ?
SCREEN:

• Multi-Touch display (Multiple inputs from multiple users).

• Recognize objects.

INFRARED:

• IR LED light source.

• Multiple infrared cameras.

How does CPU and Projector work ?
CPU:

• The same components found in everyday desktop

computer.

• A modified version of Microsoft Vista.

PROJECTOR:

• Projects the information to the surface.

• Uses DLP. CPU Projector

• DLP is based on Digital Micrometer Device.
Software Specifications

• Software platform runs on Windows Vista.

• It has Wired Ethernet 10/100.

• WLAN of 802.11b/g.

• Bluetooth connectivity.
How Surface Computer works?

• At a high level, Surface uses five cameras to sense objects.

This user input is then processed and the result is displayed.

• Microsoft Surface can also identify physical objects that

have bar-code-like tags (Domino tag).

Camera
Technology behind Multi-touch

• Based on Total Internal Reflection(TIR).

• When one or more fingers touches the surface, TIR pathway changes.
Four Key Attributes

Direct Multi - user

Interaction Experience

Multi – touch Object

contact Recognition
Direct Interaction

• Direct interaction means that, we can interact with the Surface by

using our fingers.

• No other input device is needed to give input.

• This provides a natural interface effect

Multi - user Experience

• A single touch screen can support more than one user.

• Each user can interact independently with the surface.

Multi – touch contact

• Ordinary touch screens provide only single touch sensing.

• In surface more than one touch can be recognized at the same time.
Object Recognition

• Object recognition is done in the surface by using special bar codes called
Domino tags.

• These are infrared sensitive patterns which are read by the infrared sensing
cameras inside the surface.
Applications

• Instantly compares while shopping.

• Interaction with digital content by share, drag and drop digital images.

• Surface Restaurant.

• Quickly browse through play list entries dragging favorite song to the current track.
Instantly compares while shopping.

Comparing of Objects
• We can directly compare different products just by placing them on the surface.

• This is done using object recognition technology.

Interaction with digital content by share, drag
and drop digital images
• Digital images are manipulated, shared
& sent via technologies like WIFI,
Bluetooth, etc..

Dragging of Images
Surface restaurant

• Orders can be placed on the Surface from a sliding menu.

Placing of Orders
Quickly browse through play list entries
dragging favorite song to the current track.
• Microsoft surface applications can be written in Windows
Presentation Foundation(WPF).

• Also supports XNA tool kit

Advantages

• Can handle multiple users at the same time.

• No wires or USB ports is required.

• Instant download/upload of photos.

• Users have more control of technology i.e. ordering food ormanipulating photos fast.

• Time saving by eliminating more processes.

Disadvantages
• Not portable and very expensive ($ 12,000-$15,000).

• Need for dim lighting to avoid washing out the screen.

• Poor Accuracy- Fat fingers are not as accurate as a mouse or stylus.

• Objects needs to be tagged.

Future of Surface Computing

• The future : As form factors continue to evolve, surface

computing will be in any number of environments – school,
businesses, homes and any number of forms.
Conclusion

Conclusion on Surface Computing will be that it is a great technology and saves space on the
table.

Earlier it was-'A COMPUTER ON EVERY DESKTOP' Now we say 'EVERY DESKTOP WILL BE

A COMPUTER.’
