TTL 2 Lesson 1

ICTs have brought about significant changes in education by enabling online learning tools and methodologies. The document discusses how ICTs can be used to develop 21st century skills in students. It identifies six key 21st century skills - collaboration, knowledge construction, self-regulation, real-world problem solving and innovation, use of ICT for learning, and skilled communication. The Gradual Release of Responsibility model is presented as a framework to integrate these 21st century skills through focused lessons, guided instruction, collaborative learning, and independent tasks. Overall, the document advocates for the use of ICTs to make learning more effective and help students gain important skills for the 21st century.

USING ICT IN

DEVELOPING 21ST
CENTURY SKILLS

Gladys L. Lagura,EdD
Instructor
Introduction:
Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have
brought about a paradigm shift in education. Online educational
methodology and tools like massive open online course (Mooc),
modular object-oriented dynamic learning environment (Moodle),
videoconferencing, virtual laboratories, screencasts, e-mail, forums,
search engines, blogs, podcasts, vodcasts, wikis, vokis, high-tech 3D
graphics, e-Groups, learning dialogue videos, learning-by-doing
.
videos, digital game/toy-based learning and flipped-classrooms with
. associated pedagogy of active learning have quickly emerged as the
.
backbone of effective education in this century. In fact, blended
. learning is the necessity of 21st century.
.

.
Lesson Outcomes:
•Use ICT to develop 21st century skills
•Analyze learning plans in the context
of the 21st century skills
.

.
Benefit of ICT
•ICTs provide a great solution for information
collection and sharing, making learning more
relaxed and productive
Tools like free and open source software (FOSS), and websites like github.com
and SourceForge.net, help students with knowledge building, reflection, sharing
and collaboration in project work.
. •ICTs also promote self-evaluation and self-study
.

.
via online tools
. Users can learn in their own dialects, which fills the gap of language
. barrier in teaching-learning process
.
Benefit of ICT
 Integration of ICTs in education helps students,
teachers and administrators alike
Computer-like gadgets have emerged as guided and effective learning tools for kids
Teachers and administrators use ICT tools like electronic data interchange or management
information system for quick and accurate exam entries or other data logging operations

.
ICTs help where traditional methods of learning
. may not be effective
.
such as for students with learning disabilities like dyscalculia and dyslexia. Research
. and revision can be done on the Internet as well as by using storage media like CD-
. ROMs and USB drives and application programs.
.
.

.
ICT and 21 Century Skills
st

21st century skills are those that employers and the

community in general see as valuable for people to
contribute economically and socially, as leaders or as
active participants, and as entrepreneurs in society
(21CLD Learning Activity Rubrics ,2014).

.
Their six 21st century skills are:
• collaboration
• knowledge construction
• self-regulation
• real-world problem solving and
. innovation
.

.
• the use of ICT for learning
.

.
• skilled communication.
The Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) Pedagogical
Framework
GRR is a structured pedagogical framework that, as the name suggests, gradually
moves the responsibility for learning from the teacher to the student. There are four
distinct phases in GRR:
1. Focused lesson: the skill or process to be taught is explicitly modelled by the
teacher, with students passively observing.
2. Guided instruction: students attempt the skill or process modelled in the first
stage, one step at a time, with teacher support or guidance, rather than modelling.
3. Collaborative learning: students continue to improve their skills at their own
.

.
pace, but work collaboratively with their peers rather than the teacher.
. 4. Independent tasks: students apply their learning in new situations.
.

.
Integration of GRR with 21st Century Skills
In an initial attempt to integrate GRR with 21st century skills, Table 1 shows a
mapping between specific activities related to each 21st century skill and the GRR
phase in which that activity should be observed.
