Introduction

to
Literature
Broadly is any collection of written or
oral work
Narrowly refers to writings specifically
considered to be an art form
Latin root literature:
litteratura (from littera)
(letter of the alphabet /
handwriting) LITERATURE
GENRE:
Drama
Poetry
Prose (Fiction / Non-fiction)
The study of Literature has always two
aspects:
• ONE of simple
enjoyment and

ART
appreciation
• The other of
analysis and exact
description.
Let a little song appeal to the
ear or a noble book to the
heart, and for the moment, at
least…
...we discover a new world, a
world so different from our
own that it seems a place of
dreams and magic.
To enter and enjoy this new
world, to love good books
for their own sake is the
chief thing…

…to analyze and explain

them is a less joyous
but still an
important matter.
The Child
and
the Shell
A child and a man were one day
walking on the seashore when
the child found a little shell and
held it to his ear.
Sounds. strange, low, melodious
sounds…
…as if the shell were
remembering and repeating to
itself the murmurs of its ocean
home.
The child's face filled with wonder
as he listened…
…here in the little shell, was a
voice from another world.
Then came the man…
…explaining that the child heard
nothing strange;
…that the pearly curves of the
shell simply caught a multitude
of sounds too faint for human
ears…
…and filled the
glimmering hollows with the
murmur of innumerable echoes.
It was not a new world,
but only the unnoticed
harmony of the old that
had aroused
the child's wonder.
The ESSENTIAL QUALITIES of
LITERATURE
The essentially artistic quality
of all literature.
All art is the expression of life in forms of truth
and beauty; or rather, it is the reflection of some
truth and beauty which are in the world…

…which remain unnoticed until brought to

attention
by some sensitive human soul.
Its suggestiveness.

It appeals to our emotions and

imagination
rather than to our intellect.

The province of all art is not to instruct

but to delight, as such magic is in words.
When Faustus in the presence of Helen asks,
“Was this the face that launched a thousand
ships?"
he does not state a fact or expect an
answer.

He opens a door…
…through which our imagination enters a new
Its permanence.
Literature does not willingly let any beautiful
thing perish. To understand people from our
past, we must read not simply their history, which
records their deeds, but their literature, which
records the dreams that made their deeds
possible.

Goethe explained literature as "the

humanization of the whole world."
The IMPORTANCE of
LITERATURE
Literature preserves the ideals of a
people, and ideals are the part of
human life most worthy of
preservation.

Being able to empathise with a group

of characters written on a page is
categorical and a necessary skill.

The ability to sense themes and

messages opens us up to another
way of thinking.
Expanding horizons. Literature opens
our eyes to make us see more of the
world. We begin to learn, ask
questions, make realizations, and
build our intuitions and instincts.
We expand our minds.

Building critical thinking skills. When

we read, we are taught to find
symbols, make connections, read
between the lines. We learn to
analyze situations and to come up
with solutions.
Generic
Classifications of
Literature
PROSE
FICTION. Fiction writing that uses
characters,setting,and plot to convey stories
that are not real (ex. novels, short-stories,
fables etc.)

NON-FICTION. Factual and true writing that

tells about real people, places and events (ex.
History, news, autobiography etc.)
POETRY
Lyric Poetry. A comparatively short, non-
narrative poem in which a single speaker
presents a state of mind or an emotional state.

It retains some of the elements of song which is said

to be its origin: For Greek writers, the lyric was a
song accompanied by the lyre.
POETRY
Narrative Poetry. Gives a verbal
representation, in verse, of a sequence of
connected events.

It propels characters through a plot.

Always told by a narrator, it might also tell a
love story.
POETRY
Descriptive and Didactic Poetry.
Both lyric and narrative poetry can contain
lengthy and detailed descriptions
(descriptive poetry)…

…or scenes in direct speech

(dramatic poetry).
POETRY
Didactic poem. Primarily to teach
something. This can take the form of very
specific instructions, but it can also be
meant as instructive in a general way. Until
the twentieth century all literature was
expected to have a didactic purpose in a
general sense, that is, to impart moral,
theoretical or even practical knowledge
DRAMA
Drama comes from the Greek word for
"action." In theater, drama is presented by
actors to an audience.
Comedy | Tragedy | Farce | Melodrama
