Waves
Waves
Waves
• are moving energy travelling along
the interface between ocean and
atmosphere, often transferring energy
from a storm far out at sea over
distances of several thousand
kilometers.
What causes waves?
• Release of energy
• Wind blowing across the surface of the
ocean generates most ocean waves.
• Movement of fluids with different
densities
What causes waves?
• Air-water interface
• Air-air interface
• Water-water interface
Air – Water Interface
• the movement of air across the ocean
surface creates ocean waves.
Air – Air Interface
• the movement of different air
masses creates atmospheric
waves, which are often
represented by ripple-like
clouds in the sky.
Water – Water Interface
• the movement of water of different
densities creates internal waves. Because
these waves travel along the boundary
between waters of different density, they
are associated with pycnocline.
• Internal waves can be much larger than
surface waves, with heights exceeding
100 meters.
