INTRODUCTION
The reason for the development of pediatric nursing are high
infant mortality rate, low birth weight and increased child
mortality.
Through the international activities of WHO IMCI(Integrated
Management of Childhood Illness ,UNICEF and other health
agencies are providing to develop the level of child health
care throughout the world.
It includes :
Hospital environment for a sick child.
Advanced changes in medical and nursing care
Expansion in independent role of pediatric nursing
Pediatric nurse practitioner
Pediatric clinic nurse specialist.

ROLE OF PEDIATRIC NURSE
The pediatric nurses role is unique because
of developmental immaturity and
vulnerability of children.
The goals of nursing care of children and family
based on community:

1.Promote healthy maturation as physical,

of his family and communities.(primary level)

.2. Provide health care for the child who requires


treatment from disease(secondary level).

ROLE OF PEDIATRIC NURSE
IN PRIMARY LEVEL:
Through health education to child and his parents
and providing Child’s basic needs and
immunization, she can:
1. Maintain child's health.
2. Help the child achieves his optimum growth and
development.
3. Prevent diseases and their complications.
 In Secondary Level:

The nurse has to provide care to sick


children and their families by:
1. Assessing their needs.
2. Planning for care.
3. Implementing the plan.
4. Evaluating children's condition.
5. Providing heath teaching to children and
their parents.
In Tertiary Level:
The nurse should assist children to return
to their maximal level of functioning
following illness and /or disabilities.
EXTENDED ROLE OF
PEDIATRIC NURSE
Primary care giver:
 

In hospital, care of sick children includes comfort, feeding,


bathing, safety etc.

At community set up, basic responsibilities include health


assessment, immunization, primary health care & referral etc.
. Coordinator & Collaborator:
The nurse plays an extremely important role with
the combination of health care team member

The nurse coordinates nursing care with other


services for meeting the needs of child.

For ex: physician, social worker, surgeon,


physiotherapist, dietician etc.
 Nurse Advocate:
The pediatric nurse acts as an advocate to safeguard
the child’s right, to assist & to provide best care from
the health care team

E.g. :It can range from consulting dietary department


for special foods to arrange team meeting to discuss
plan of care with other health team members.
Health Educator:

The nurse’s goal is to bring change in attitude and


bring healthful practice regarding child care.
Nurse Counselor:
Providing guidance to parents in health hazards of
children and help them for own decision making in
different situations.
Nurse Consultant:
The pediatric nurse can act as consultant to guide
parents for maintenance and promotion of health.

For ex: Guiding parents about feeding practices,


accident prevention.
RECREATIONALIST
• The supportive role of pediatric nurse is
important for the child to adjust to the crisis
• She can organize play activities for
recreational and divertional of childs
emotional outlet.
Therapeutic relationship
• It is the essential foundation for quality
nursing care.
• She must relate children and family in a
meaningful way, and yet remain separate
enough to distinguish their own feeling and
needs in a therapeutic relationship .
Expanded role of nurse
• Expanded role of nurse means enlargement of
nursing within the boundaries of nursing.
• Expanded role of nurse is the responsibility
assumed by the nurse within the field of
practice.
 Advanced practice registered nurse

• APRN has education beyond, GNM,4 years B.Sc (n)


• The curriculum includes classroom and clinical experience in advanced
health assessment, physiology And pathophysiology management with
common and complex illness condition.

• In addition to increased educators, the APRN role requires extra


responsibility, critical thinking and judgment.

• APRN includes
• Nurse practitioner
• Clinical nurse specialist
• Certified nurse midwife
• Certified registered nurse anesthetists.
Pediatric nurse practitioner

This program provides education beyond B. Sc (N)


preparation in area of child health maintenance.

PNP are health care provider who are dedicated to


improve child health care by working with pediatrician
and other health care workers
Chronic ill care concentration
• The chronic ill care concentration includes clinical
course in specific specialty area approved by program
faculty.
• This concentration prepares the PNP students for a
care of children with chronic condition.
• The PNP interact with other health care worker to
provide health care to chronically ill children
• The scholarly inquiry praxis for students is diagnosed
to focus on an issue or top relevant to care of children
with chronic illness.
THE CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST
• Provide consultant services.
• The CNS role has developed within each of the
traditional specialty area as well a subspecialty
such as cardiovascular, oncology, and
neurology.
• Both CNS and PNP are called as advanced
nurse practitioner.
NURSING RESEARCHER
• Nursing research is the integral part of
professional nursing.
• Clinical and applied research provides the
basis for changes in nursing practice and
improvement, in the health care of children.
CONCLUSION
• Provide health maintenance care for children
including well child examination.
• Perform routine developmental services.
• Diagnose and treat common childhood illness
• Provide anticipatory guidance regarding
common child health concern.
• Provide childhood immunization.
