Lesson 6:

Read and Interpret

Product Designs
Learning Competencies:
• Apply the principles of design and color harmonies
• Assess the appropriateness of design
• Perform basic hand stitches
Principles of Design
 are essential to the development and production of
clothing used by individuals and families around the
world
Principles of Design
 Balance
 Emphasis
 Rhythm
 Harmony
Principles of Design
1. BALANCE – according to this principle,
from the center of the dress, design should
be identified on both sides

a. Formal Balance – the structure decoration and

accessories are almost ideal on both sides from
the center of the dress.

b. Informal Balance – the structure decoration

and accessories are different on both sides
from the center of the dress
Principles of Design
2. EMPHASIS – is achieved by the
designer’s ability to create a center
of interest by which the viewer’s
eyes are directed to a specific area
of a garment or body part.
Principles of Design
3. RHYTHM – principle of art created by the repeated use of the
design
a. Repetition of lines, colors, or accessories – parallel
lines are formed by the use of seams, buttons, embroidery, lace, and others
which help uninterrupted eye movement.

b. Radiation – created by the use of radiated lines. It

creates a feeling of movement in different directions.

c. Gradation – created by gradual change of lines,

shape or shade of the color.
Principles of Design

4. HARMONY – a relationship of
different portion of a design. Harmony
should be achieved through judicious
use of color, shape, and texture to give
a feeling of oneness.
Elements of Design
 Lines
 Texture
 Color
Elements of Design
1. LINES – the basic part of any design is
formed by lines. The eye tends to follow
the direction of the line in a dress design
or in the fabric of the dress
1. Horizontal Lines – makes a person look
shorter and heavier

2. Vertical Lines – makes a person look taller

and slimmer
Elements of Design
2. TEXTURE – appeals strongly to the
sense of touch, the feel of the
fabric (coarse or smooth, hard or
soft, think or fine, dull or glossy).

- type of cloth to be used in the dress

is determined by the body figure,
season, and occasion.
Elements of Design
3. COLOR – reflect the interest and personality of the person and helps
in enhancing it.

- right choice of colors in the dress gives a feeling of increased

self-confidence.
