Who responsible for devolopoing safe work
practices and procedures ?

Employers are required to ensure the health, safety


and welfare of their workers. This includes plan of
orienting and training workers and supervisors in
general workplace and job-specific safe work
practices and procedures. (Please reffer to section 4
of the Occupational Health and Safety [OH&S] Act
and paragraph 4(1) (d) of the OH&S Regulations.)
What are safe work practices and
procedures ?
Safe work practices and procedures are written documents used to
train and guide workers in the safety way to perform their jobs.

A Practices is set of guidelines established to help workers


perform a task which my not require a step-by-step procedure.

A Procedure is step-by-step process for performing a task safely


from beginning to end.
What are the benefits of having safe work
practices and procedures in workplace ?

Safe work practices and procedures:

 Provide standards for how work is carried out

 Positively affect quality, efficiency and productivity

 Prevent injury and illness by controlling potential hazards

 Fulfill legislative requirements are a means by which


employers and workers practice due diligence
 Provide a standard for:
 training and orienting workers
 reviewing work processes with all workers
 Completing work activities safely
 Evaluating work performance
Who should develop safe work
practices and procedures ?

Employers need to assess the knowledge,


skill and experience of their workers as a
means of deciding who should be responsible
for developing safe work practices and
procedures
What are some steps included in
implementing safe work practices and
procedures ?

Implementing safe work practices and procedures would include:

 a communication plan to inform workers

 a training plan who needs training, how much training is needed, how must time
is required for training

 an orientation plan for new workers, for workers who change jobs, and for
workers returning to the workplace after an extended absence

 a process for ensuring compliance

 a procedures for reviewing all safe work practices and procedures


Tips for developing safe work
practices and procedures
 Involve the workers who regularly perform the job

 Put the steps in the correct sequence

 Number the steps

 Identify the hazards associated with each step

 Evaluate the hazard based on severity and frequency

 Establish controls for the hazards recognized and evaluated

 Use vocabulary appreciate to the workers

 Write short clear sentences


 Ensure instruction are accurate

 Use consistent terminology

 Use “active” verbs for instructions

 Use consistent formatting (e.g. heading and front size)

 Ask workers to review prior to implementation


Before implementing a safe work practice and procedure, the most
important question to ask is:

“Is this document easy for


workers to use?”
