STANDARD DEVIATION
Standard deviation enables us to compare data
points from different sets of data.
When two groups are compared, the group
having the smaller standard deviation is less
varied. It denotes a close clustering about the
mean.
The smaller the standard deviation, the more
consistent the data are.
Example 1:
The scores of 7 students in their 20-item Math
quiz are 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18. calculate
the standard deviation.
Given:
• Scores: 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18
• N= 7 students

STEP 1:

´𝑥 =
∑ 𝑥 = 12+13+14+15+16 +17+18 = 105 =15
𝑁 7 7
Step 2 and 3:
• Construct a table of values.

12 15 -3 9
13 15 -2 4
14 15 -1 1
15 15
0 0
16 15 1 1
17 15
2 4
18 15 3 9
  = 28
Step 4: Step 5:
•   𝟐
∑ ( 𝒙− ´𝒙 ) = 28 =4

Example 2:
You have found the following ages (in years) of
all 5 gorillas at your local zoo: 16, 20, 21, 13, and
15. what is the standard deviation?
Given:
• Scores: 16, 20, 21, 13, 15
• N= 5

STEP 1:

´𝑥 =
∑ 𝑥 = 16+ 20+21+13+ 15 = 85 =17
𝑁 5 5
Step 2 and 3:
• Construct a table of values.

16 17 -1 1
20 17 3 9
21 17 4 16
13 17
-4 16
15 17 -2 4
  = 46
Step 4: Step 5:
•   𝟐
∑ ( 𝒙− ´𝒙 ) = 46 =9.2

Did you know?
Standard deviation is also used in finance, in
business, in studying, in sports and mostly in
inferential statistics.
Evaluation
• Solve the problem.
You grow 5 crystals from a solution and measure
the length of each crystal in millimeters. Here is
your data: 9, 2, 5, 4, and 10. Calculate the
standard deviation of the length of the crystals.
Assignment
• Find the standard deviation of the amounts of
gold coins the 8 pirates have: 4, 2, 5, 8, 6, 2, 7,
and 9.
