DEFINITION OF PARAPHRASE

A paraphrase (par–uh-freyz):
• A paraphrase is a restatement of the meaning of a text or passage using other words. 
• In the past, paraphrasing and translation were considered to be unconnected language
processing tasks.
• We can actually define translation as the art of paraphrasing a text from one language into
another.
DEFINITION OF PARAPHRASE

Original sentence:
• She angered me with her inappropriate comments, rumor-spreading, and
disrespectfulness at the formal dinner table.
Paraphrased sentences:
• Những lời bình luận khiếm nhã, thói buôn chuyện, và. thái độ bất thiếu tôn trọng mọi
người của cô ta tại bữa tối làm tôi phát cáu.
PARAPHRASING TECHNIQUES

1. Using synonyms (words that mean the same)

REFORMULATING THE TEXT

This translation technique:

• shortens and simplifies long and complex sentences.
• introduces a change in grammatical structure.
REFORMULATION
EXAMPLE 1:
• Original:
UK business continued to be highly visible in Vietnam. BP is the biggest in- vestor, and the production of "first gas"
from the Nam Con Son basin'on 26 November was a tremendous achievement after many years of hard work by
BP'and their partners.
• Interpreting:
Các doanh nghiệp Anh vẫn tiếp tục duy trì hình ảnh tốt đẹp của mình ở Việt Nam.
BP là nhà đầu tư lớn nhất.
Lượng khí đầu tiên được sản xuất tại Nam Côn Sơn ngày 26-11.
Đó là thành tựu lớn sau nhiều năm vất vả của BP và các đối tác của mình..

• Original:
Rural people need roads linking their homes to district and provincial çentres, where they can sell their
agricultural produce, access education and health-care or in- formation, for example, on how to
improve their crops.
• Interpreting:
Nông dân cẩn những con đường nối nhà của họ với huyện, tỉnh.
Đó là nơi họ ra bán sản phẩm nông nghiệp, nơi họ đi học, khám bệnh, và lấy thông tin.
Ví dụ như thông tin về cải tiến trồng trọt.

However, not all passive sentences in English should be turned into active sentences in
Vietnamese.
• The service is provided under a contract.
• Dịch vụ được cung cấp theo hợp đồng.

• The lounge and diningroom are said to have formed part of the original building and they
are decorated and (are) furnished in conformity with the style of that pe riod.
• Người ta nói rằng phòng khách và phòng ăn đã tạo nên một bộ phận của ngôi nhà xưa. Các
phòng này được trang trí và (được) thiết kế nội thất theo đúng phong cách của thời kỳ đó.

NOU PHRASES
In English, noun phrase is used more often than in Vietnamese.
• English: I'm sorry for my late answer. - Tôi xin lỗi vì đã trả lời (ông) chậm.
• English: ... Miss Susan Becker (a stewardess) assumed it (a cuckoo clock) was a bomb.
She alerted the pilot of the Boeing 727 who made an emergency landing at Berlin where
eighty passengers left in a hurry through fire exit
• Vietnamese: Cô Susan Becker (tiếp viên hàng không) cho nó (chiếc đồng hổ chuông) là một
quả bom. Cô đã báo động cho phi công chuyến Boeing 727 ha cánh khẩn cấp xuống Berlin, và
tám mươi hành khách đã vội vã rời khỏi máy bay qua cửa thoát hiểm.
