Area and Perimeter Review

The document provides guidance on calculating the perimeter and area of rectilinear shapes and squares. It defines perimeter as the distance around a shape and area as the space covered. Formulas are given for calculating the perimeter of rectangles and squares using side lengths. The area of a rectangle is calculated as length x width, and the area of a square is the length of a side squared. Several examples are worked through.

Reviewing Perimeter
Perimeter is the distance around a figure or shape.

What is a rectilinear figure?
A rectilinear figure can be defined as a plane figure or
shape whose all sides meet at right angles.
Let’s find the perimeter of this rectilinear shape if each
side is equal to one cm.

Count the number of sides.

Perimeter = 24 cm

Perimeter Of Rectangles
We measure the perimeter of rectangles
using the length and breadth measurements.
The perimeter is found by adding up all the length
and width measurements.

Answer
Add up all the length and width measurements.

12cm + 12cm + 5cm + 5cm = 34cm

Do we have to measure every side to work out
the perimeter?

Perimeter of Squares
This shape is a square.
We know that one of its sides is 4cm.

All sides of a square are equal.

4cm The perimeter of this square is

4cm + 4cm + 4cm + 4cm = 16cm

(or 4cm × 4sides = 16cm)

 Area is the amount of space covered by an
object.

 Area is calculated in the square

units.
When you measure the amount of
carpet to cover the floor of a room,
you measure it in square units.

Would the area of your bedroom

or the area of your house be
greater?

You’re right! The area of your

house is greater than the area of
your bedroom.
Let’s find the area of this rectilinear shape if each
square is equal to one metre.

Count the number of squares.
