MUNICIPALITY OF CARMEN

 Carmen, officially the Municipality of Carmen (Cebuano: Lungsod sa


Carmen; Tagalog: Bayan ng Carmen), is a 2nd class municipality in
the province of Bohol, Philippines. According to the 2015 census, it
has a population of 46,306 people. 
 The town of Carmen, Bohol celebrates its fiesta on January 17, to
honor the town patron Saint Anthony de Abbot.
 Carmen was originally part of the municipality of Bilar and called
Imbaya, after the name of a stream in the settlement. During the
Spanish time, it was inhabited by not more than fifty families. In
1868, the people of Carmen petitioned for its independence since
its population grew to an unprecedented number. The Chocolate Hills,
numerous mounds of brown-coloured limestone formations, are the most
popular attraction. The formations can be seen by land (climbing the highest
point) or by air via ultralight air tours.
CARMEN BOHOL HISTORY
 Carmen was originally part of the municipality of Bilar and called Imbaya, after the name of a stream
in the settlement. During the Spanish time, it was inhabited by not more than fifty families. In 1868, the
people of Carmen petitioned for its independence since its population grew to an unprecedented
number. The town of Carmen was founded on 1 March 1869 by final order of Governor General Jose
de la Gandara and renamed at the same time in honor of the Lady of Carmel of Spain. In 1874, the
town of Carmen had its separate parish with Father Pedro Nolasco San Juan as the first parish priest.
 Due to the influence of Spanish culture and tradition, all barangays of Carmen have a patron saint as
well as a Spanish name, who are celebrated in an annual barangay fiesta.
 In World War II, Carmen served as the stronghold of the guerrilla resistance movement and the local
civil government because of its strategic location. Even at present, the municipality still serves the same
purpose of being the provincial center of dynamic activities.
 In 2013 a magnitude 7.2 earthquake shook Central Visayas region, with its epicenter within Carmen
municipality.

>Carmen was formerly a village called Ymbaya, a part of the municipality of Bilar. During the
Spanish Regime, it was inhabited by not more than fifty (50) families.
>The town was finally established on March 1, 1869 by virtue of an order issued by Governor
General Jose de la Gandara.
>However, for a period of five years, it remained under the parish of Bilar. In the year 1874, it
was made a separate parish with Father Pedro Nolasco San Juan as the first parish priest.

the Marian apparitions reported in 1917 by three shepherd
children at the Cova da Iria, in Fátima, Portugal. The three
children were Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and
Jacinta Marto.f Fátima.

>Bishop José Alves Correia da Silva declared the events worthy


of belief on 13 October 1930.
>On 13 May 1946, Pope Pius XII granted a canonical
coronation to the venerated image enshrined at the Chapel of the
Apparitions of Fátima via his apostolic legate,
Cardinal Benedetto Aloisi Masella.
>On 11 November 1954, he raised the Sanctuary of Fátima to the
status of a minor basilica by his papal brief Luce superna.

>>The hill is located in Barangay Buenavista, just along the


national road, and has now become a pilgrimage site and
likewise a tourist attraction. Every May 15th, in memory of the
first day when the Blessed Virgin appeared to the children in the
year 1917, the area is full of pilgrims who come to ask for favors
from God and give thanks for favors granted thru her
intercession.
>St. Anthony de Abbot Parish in Carmen Bohol is being
down because of the earthquake last year 2013. The
picture in the right side is the image of the new build
church of St. Anthony de Abbot Parish.

only Sunday but everyday. It is a historical and
religious place.

man of letters who was an inspiration to the Philippine nationalist movement.

ordinances and resolutions for the administration of a municipality.
