Conditional sentences
USE

 We use conditional sentences to describe a condition


and the result that follows.

 There are different types of conditional sentences which


vary in structure according to the probability of fulfilling
the condition.
Conditional sentences
USE

 Conditional sentences contain two clauses:


• the clause which expresses the condition and usually starts
with the word if;
• the clause which expresses the result.

 The two clauses can be inverted without changing the


meaning of the sentence.

 When the if clause is at the beginning of the sentence,


it is followed by a comma.

Type 0

 We use a type 0 conditional to talk about things that are always or


generally true.

If + present simple present simple

Examples:
If you heat ice, it melts.
If I arrive late, the teacher gets angry.

Type 1

 We use a type 1 conditional to talk about future events that are


likely to happen.

Condition Result
If + present simple future (will/won’t)

Examples:
If we hurry, we’ll catch the bus.
If I have time later, I’ll post the photos on Facebook.
If I see Mary at school, I won’t send her an invitation by
email.

Type 2

 We use a type 2 conditional to talk about future events that are


imaginary or unlikely.

Condition Result
If + past simple would/could + infinitive

Examples:
If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world.
If I had a smartphone, I could access the internet all the time.
