TWO WAY SLAB WITH BEAMS
DESIGN EXAMPLE (EXTRA)
TWO WAY SLAB WITH BEAMS
The plan of a four story building consisting of two
way reinforced concrete slabs with monolithic beams
is shown in figure below. The dead load consist of self
weight plus 2½” F.F. and 60 psf for partitions. Live
load = 100 psf. Story height 10 ft. f’c = 4 ksi fy = 60
ksi. All beams are 14”x 24” and all column 14” x 14” in
size. Assume same concrete for floor slab and beams.
a. Calculate the slab thickness for the floor system
according to the provisions of ACI Code 9.5.3
b. Check slab geometry and loading for the use of
DDM of ACI Code.
Slab thickness
1. Assume trial slab thickness = Perimeter /180
=((25 – 14/12)+(28 – 14/12))x2x1.1x12/180
= 7.43” say 8”.
2. Effective beam size and their moment of inertia.
a. Edge beam, B-1, B-2, B-5 and B-6.
Effective beam size, according to ACI Code
13.2.4 is shown below.

b. Interior Beam B-3, B-4, B-7 and B-8
According to the code, effective beam size is
shown below.
