Introduction to social interaction
• Exchange between two or more individuals and is essential
for the formation of social groups
• Through social interaction members of a society design rule
s and standards to operate
Five types of social interaction
1. Cooperation – individuals or groups working together for a goal
2. Conflict – for the purpose of defeating an opponent
Five types of social interaction
3. Conformity – complying with expected social norms
4. Coercion – being forced to behave in a certain way
5. Social Exchange – expecting reward for doing something
Social Structure
• System of stratification of a society in socioeconomic terms, social institutions and so
cial statuses
• Elements of Social Structure
• Social Statuses – Ascribed (assigned at birth) and achieved (earned through effort)
• Social Roles – Set of expectations for a group of people
• Role conflict
• Role strain
• Role exit
Elements of Social Structure

• Social Groups – Any number of individuals that share common values, goals and int
eract on a regular basis
• Formal and informal groups
• Primary and secondary groups
• In group and out group
• Reference or membership groups
• Focus groups
• Social Institutions – Organized patterns of belief and behavior centered on basic hu
man needs.
• Social institutions include - family, education, economy, religion, politics and culture
Elements of Social Structure

• Social Inequality – Occurs when resources in a society are unevenly distributed


• Examples include, social class, division of labor, income gap, gender inequality etc.
Major Agents of Socialization

Family – basic values, norms and social attitudes


Education – conformity, discipline
Workplaces – responsibility and organization
Peer Group – cooperation and conflict
Religion – belief system and moral values
Mass Media – influences political and cultural views
Social Construction of Reality

• Important part of the process of socialization


• Through socialization, members of society learn to attribute meaning to social
concepts
• Internalization of social norms and values
• Generalizing social values
• Agents of socialization – family, peer group, media etc.
Dramaturgy – Erving Goffman

• Study of social interaction in terms of theatrical performance


• Goffman believed that life is a stage and everyone is playing a role/character in the s
ociety
• The process of socialization consists of the learning to act out these roles properly
• Front stage – social situations where one has to interact with others
• Back stage – when an individual is alone and does not need to act; prepares for the
front stage
• Impression management is controlled through one’s appearance, social setting and
manner of interaction
