Lesson 3 - Divisibility Rules For 4, 8, 12 and 11

1) The document discusses divisibility rules for numbers 4, 8, 12, and 11. 2) It provides examples of using the last 1-3 digits to determine if a number is divisible by 4, 8, or 12. 3) For numbers divisible by 11, it examines the sum of alternating digits and whether their difference is divisible by 11.

USING DIVISIBILITY RULES

FOR 4, 8,12 AND 11 TO FIND

THE COMMON FACTORS.
Lesson 3
Is 116divisible by 4?
If the number formed by the last two digits is divisible by 4, then the original
number is divisible by 4
Solution:
16 ÷ 4 = 4

Therefore 116 is divisible 4.

DIVISIBILITY RULE FOR 4
• A number is divisible by 4 if…

• The last 2 digits of the number is divisible by 4.

• Examples
• 9,264
• 1,209,124
• 216
Is 1 248 divisible by 8?
If the number formed by the last three digits is divisible by 8,
then the original number is divisible by 8.
Solution:
The last three digits of 1 248 are 248. 248 ÷ 8 = 31

Therefore, 1 248 is divisible by 8.That is 1 248 divided 8 is 156.

DIVISIBILITY RULE FOR 8
• A number is divisible by 8 if…

• The last 3 digits of the number are divisible by 8.

• Examples
• 9,808
• 8,942,216
• 848
Is 671 divisible by 11?
• The number is divisible by 11 if the difference of the sum of
the digits in the odd places and the sum of those the even
places is 0 or divisible by 11.
• Solution
(the alternate digits of 671 are 6 and 1 whose sum is 6 + 1 = 7
the remaining digit is 7. The difference of two is 7 – 7 = 0 which
is divisible by 11.
So the original number 671 is divisible by 11. That is 671 ÷ 11 = 61
DIVISIBILITY RULE FOR 11
• A number is divisible by 11 if…

• the difference of the sum of the digits in the odd places and the sum of those in the even places is
0 or divisible by 11

• Examples

24145
4+ 4= 8 2+1+5=8, 8-8=0
• 50248
8+ 2+ 5= 15 0+4+=, 15-4=11
Is 671 divisible by 11?
• If a number is divisible by 11, you have to first check if it
is divisible by 3 and 4.

DIVISIBILITY RULE FOR 12
• A number is divisible by 12 if…

• A number is divisible by 12 if it is divisible by both 3 and 4.

• Examples
• 240, 612
• 1716
