LISTENING

Hearing vs. Listening

 Hearing – the sense through which a person or
animal is aware of sound
– the process, function, or power of perceiving
sound; specifically: the special sense by which
noises and tones are received as stimuli
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
 Listening – to pay attention to someone or
something in order to hear what is being said,
sung, played, etc.
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
 Listening is the ability to accurately receive and
interpret messages in the communication
process.
 Listening is key to all effective communication.
 Listening is receiving language through ears.
 Listening involves identifying the sounds of
speech and processing them into words and
sentences.
 Listening in any language requires focus and
attention.
Roadblocks to Listening

 Internal Interference
(preoccupied, worried/problematic, tired, etc.)
 External Interference
(noise, distractions)
 Language and Cultural Barriers
 Speaker – Generated Variables
(speaker eats his/her own words, fails to project
his voice, exhibits distracting behaviors, etc.)
Thus, in listening these
roadblocks must be eliminated.
Types of Listening

- listening for facts and ideas
 Critical or Evaluative Listening
- distinguishing facts from opinions
 Reflective or Emphatic Listening

1. Get ready to listen.

 Set your mind on what the speaker has to tell
you.
 Choose a place where you can adequately see
and hear the speaker.
 Do not slouch restlessly while listening.
 Sit erect and focus your eyes, most of time, on
the speaker.
Listening Effectively

2. Listen willingly and actively.

 Take the listening task as an opportunity for you
to increase your knowledge.
 Once the speaker opens his mouth, start
concentrating on the message.
 Be inquisitive.
 If the situation allows, ask the speaker clarifying
questions.
Listening Effectively

3. Temper your emotions and attitudes.

 Do not react emotionally and prematurely to the
message.
 Exercise self-control when you feel the urge to
leave the hall because you do not agree to what
the speaker says.
 Do not let your own views get between you and
the speaker.
 Judge the speech, not the delivery or the
speaker.
Listening Effectively

4. Do mental calisthenics.
 Try to decode the message by constructing a
mental outline of the major points and the
supporting details mentioned by the speaker.
 Be on the lookout for transitions which indicate
changes in ideas or topics.
Listening Effectively

5. React accordingly.
 Watch out for non-verbal cues that can help you
decipher what the speaker means.

funny at all.
 Do not keep nodding your head when you do not
always agree with the speaker.
Listening Effectively

insignificant or irrelevant information.
