Prayer to the Holy Spirit

1. Know the activities of Jesus during His last week in Jerusalem and
relate this to the Holy Week celebration of the Church

2. Explain the meaning and significance of Christ’s


passion and death

MORAL:
1. Enter into the Season of Lent by offering one’s own
suffering/sacrifice as a way of uniting with the passion and death of
Christ

WORSHIP:
1. Make a sincere Act of Contrition and ask for the grace of
forgiveness through the Sacrament of Reconciliation

2. Sing prayerfully the Song “Grace”


Think about the sacrifices of your parents for the
family. What have you observed? What do you
think are the motivations of your parents in
doing such sacrifices?

God is a loving Father who is willing to
give everything to us. His love is so great
to the point of sacrificing His own
Beloved Son for the sake of our
salvation.
A. THE ACTIVITIES OF JESUS DURING HIS
LAST WEEK IN JERUSALEM
● THE SUNDAY BEFORE EASTER (Palm Sunday)

1 From the area of the two


villages of Bethphage and
Bethany, Jesus makes His
triumphal entry to Jerusalem.
Each night He returns to
Bethany.
●MONDAY TO THURSDAY

[2]Jesus concludes His


confrontations with
religious establishments,
often in Jerusalem and
the Temple area. The
plot to arrest and kill Him
progress.

He is possibly anointed at this time in Bethany; Judas Iscariot


decides to betray Him.
●THURSDAY EVENING AND
NIGHT

[3] Jesus holds the Last


Supper in the Upper Room;
the apostles receive the
bread and wine as His
body and blood (He
institutes 2 sacraments on
this night).
[4] Jesus and His disciples
cross the Kidron Valley to the
Mount of Olives. As He prays in
the Garden of Gethsemane,
His disciples fall asleep.
●GOOD
FRIDAY
[5] In the Garden,
Jesus is arrested and
taken to the High
Priest’s Palace (not in He then appears before
the Temple) for the Council of the
questioning. Sanhedrin.
[6] The members of the
Sanhedrin escorted Jesus
to the Judgement Hall for
interrogation and
sentenced by Pontius
Pilate
[7] Pontius Pilate sends
Jesus to Herod’s Palace
(Herod Antipas – tetrarch
of Galilee and Perea) for
further questioning.
[8] On being taken back to
Pontius Pilate, Jesus is
sentenced to death in the
Antonia Fortress (Praetorium
or Judgement Hall)
He is also flogged,
tortured and crowned
with thorns.
[9] Jesus is taken from the
Judgement Hall to
Golgotha (Calvary) or the
Place of the Skull where He
was crucified.
Before He dies, Jesus spoke the Seven
Last Words on the Cross
DEATH AND BURIAL OF
JESUS
Jesus died at 3:00 o’clock in the afternoon and
the temple curtain was torn in two (Mk 15:38)

Jesus’ side was pierced with a spear (Jn 19:31-37)


Joseph of Arimathea took Jesus’ body
for burial (Jn 19:39-42)

Jesus’ body was laid in


the tomb (Mk 14:47)
A large stone was rolled across the entrance of the
tomb as Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of
Jesus stood watching.

The tomb was


sealed by the
Pharisees and
guarded
(Mt. 27:62)
Another way of re-living the Passion and Death of
Jesus is through the Way of the Cross
B. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF
JESUS’ PASSION AND
DEATH
[1] Redemptive
No one has greater love than
this: To lay down one’s life for
one’s friend. (Jn 13:1)
[2] Atoning

Jesus’ passion
and death repairs
the damage
caused by our
sins
[3] For us and for our
salvation

Christ suffered for you,


leaving you an example that
you should follow in his
footsteps (Pt. 2:21)
[4] Perfect self-
giving for His
Father and for us

Christ’s death is the


greatest demonstration
of God’s love for His
people.
C. THE EFFECTS OF JESUS’
DEATH
[1] Universal
Jesus died not for our sins
alone but for those of the
whole world (Jn 2:2)
[2] Eschatological

Jesus died that those


who follow Him will
receive eternal life in
the age to come.
(Mk. 10:30)
[3] Empowering

God gave eternal life


through His Son Jesus.
Whoever possesses the
Son has life; whoever does
not possess Him, does not
possess life.
(1 John 5: 11-12)
D. THE DESCENT OF CHRIST TO THE
DEAD
Christ sojourned to the
realm of the dead
prior to His
resurrection (Rom 8:11;
1 Cor 15:20;
Heb 13;16)
Christ truly and fully
died. Through His death,
He conquered “death” and
the devil who is the
author of death (Heb 2:14).
The Son of God made man
tasted death and was
buried (Heb 2:9)

Christ also went to preach to the spirits in


prison (1 Pt 3:19).
The universal scope of Christ’s redemptive
work grounds the possibility of salvation even
for those who never heard of the Good News
nor known Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ, the Son of God made man is the
first born of the dead (Col 1:18). He is the
first fruit of those who have fallen asleep.
Just as in Adam all died, so in Christ all will
come to life again (1 Cor 15:20).
“Thank you Jesus for dying for
us; thank you for rising for us.”
