Plate and Frame Filter Press

This document describes a plate and frame filter press used for industrial waste water treatment. It consists of alternating plates and frames arranged in a press. Slurry is pumped into chambers formed between the plates and frames, and solids deposit on filter cloths covering the plates. Applied pressure forces liquid through the cloths, leaving solids as a filter cake. The press can then be dismantled and cakes scraped off. Plate and frame presses provide large filtering areas in a simple and low-cost design, but require more labor than other filters. They are commonly used in industries like mining, pulp/paper, and chemicals.

INTRODUCTION
Filtration
 The mechanical operation of separating a solid from a liquid by means of a porous medium
is called filtration.
 The medium retains the solid in the form of porous cake , while the liquid passes through it.
 The driving force is required for a separation by filtration may be divided into four category
gravity , vacuum , pressure and centrifugal.

Examples of filtration
 Separation of suspended impurities from water in water purification.
PLATE AND FRAME FILTER PRESS
 It is pressure filter.

 It operates in a batch mode.

 It is named so due to it’s constructional features.

 It can be designed so as to facilitate thorough washing a cake. In such case it consist

CONSTRUCTION
• Filter cloths are placed over each plate to cover the
plate surface on both sides so that hollow frame is
separated from the plate by the filter cloth.
• The plate and frame have circular holes on the
corners for feed and discharge.
• The filter cloth also having holes.
• The filter cloth themselves act as gaskets.
• By using the hand screw or hydraulically the press is
closed and a continuous channel is formed along the
whole length.
• At the bottom of the plates, holes are cored which
connect the faces of the plates to the outlet cocks.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Advantage Disadvantage
 Simple in construction.  Labor requirement is very high.
 Low first cost.  Filter cloth life is relatively short.
 Very low maintenance and hence, its
cost is low.  Not suitable for high

INDUSTRIES
Following industry in which plate and frame filter press is use
 Petrochemical
 Metals and Mining
 Pulp and Paper
 Food & Beverage
 Pharmaceutical & Chemicals
 Biodiesel Dry Wash Separation
 Ethanol Filtration
OPERATING CONDITION
 The operating pressure is commonly up to 7 bars for metal.
 The improvement of the technology makes it possible to remove large amount of
moisture at 16 bar of pressure and operate at 30 bars.
 However, the pressure is 4-5 bars for wood or plastic frames.
 If the concentration of solids in the feed tank increase until the solid particles are
attached to each other.
 It is possible to install moving blades in the filter press to reduce resistance to flow of
liquid through the slurry.
 For the process prior to cake discharge, air blowing is used for cakes that have
permeability of 10−11 to 10−15 m2.
