Road Note No. 4 Method/DOE Method

The document provides steps to design a concrete mix for reinforced concrete using the Department of the Environment (DOE) method. The steps are: 1) Target a mean compressive strength of 30MPa at 28 days. 2) Determine a water-cement ratio of 0.5 based on strength requirements. 3) Determine a water content of 195kg/m3 for a 75mm slump with 20mm aggregate. 4) Calculate cement content of 390kg/m3 based on the water-cement ratio and water content.

Method
Example
Concrete Exposed :Moderate
Mean compressive strength at the age of 28 days: :30Mpa
Concrete Cover : 25 mm
Type of Aggregate : Un-crushed
Size of Aggregate :20 mm
Sieve Analysis result : 50%
(passes through 600 micron sieve)
Bulk Specific gravity of aggregate :2.65
Slump required : 75 mm
Design a concrete mix for a reinforced concrete by DOE method
Step-1 –Target mean Strength
In the problem given mean compressive strength at the age of 28
days =30Mpa

Step-2–Water/Cement Ratio
Referring to Table 11.11, for OPC, uncrushed aggregate,
for W/C ratio of 0.5, 28 days compressive strength is 42 Mpa.
Step-2–Water/Cement Ratio
In Fig. 11.3 find an intersection point for 42 Mpa and 0.5 W/C ratio.
Draw a dotted line curve parallel to the neighboring curve. From this
curve read off the W/C ratio for a target mean strength of 30 Mpa.

The Water/cement ratio is = 0.62

Check this W/C ratio from durability

consideration from Table 9.20. The maximum
W/C ratio permitted is 0.50. Adopt lower of
the two
Step-2–Water/Cement Ratio
Check this W/C ratio from durability consideration from Table 9.20. The maximum W/C
ratio permitted is 0.50. Adopt lower of the two. Maximum W/C ratio from Table is 0.5.
Therefore adopt W/C ratio of 0.50
Step-3-Water Content
Decide the water content for slump of 75 mm 20 mm uncrushed
aggregate from Table 11.12.

The water content is 195 kg/m3.

Step-4-Cement Content
With W/C of 0.5 and water content of 195 kg/m3, the cement
content works out to be,
=195/0.5=390kg/m3
Check this cement content with that of durability requirements
given in Table 9.20. Minimum cement content from durability point
of view is 350 kg/m3. Adopt greater of the two.
Therefore adopt cement content = 390 kg/m3
Step-5-Density of Fresh Concrete
Find out the density of fresh concrete from Fig. 11.4 for water
content of 195 kg/m3,
For 20 mm uncrushed aggregate of sp.gr. 2.65
The wet density = 2400 kg/m3
Step-6-Weight of Total Aggregate
Weight of total aggregate = 2400 - (195 +390) = 1815 kg/m3

Step-7-Percentage of Fine Aggregate

Fine aggregate from Fig. 11.5(b) For 20 mm aggregate size, W/C ratio
of 0.50, Slump of 75 mm, for 50% fines passing through 600 µ sieve,
the percentage of
F.A. = 40 percent
Weight of F A. =1815x40/100=726kg/m3

Weight of C.A =1815-726=1089kg/m3

Step-7-Percentage of Fine Aggregate
Proportion of Fine Aggregate-Percent

b) For 20 mm size
Final Estimated Quantities in kg/m3
Cement =390
F A. =726
C.A =1089
Water = 195
Wet Density =2400
Adjust the above quantities for field moisture content and water
absorption characteristics of aggregates
