Remember The Three-Step Process:: Physics Equation Practice

Frequency is defined as the number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit of time and is measured in hertz (Hz). An example calculates wave speed using the equation wave speed = frequency x wavelength. When frequency is 20Hz and wavelength is 3m, wave speed is 60m/s. Frequency of water waves in a ripple tank can be measured. Additional examples calculate wave speed for given frequencies and wavelengths. A table is presented to calculate frequency using a rearranged wave speed equation.

Physics Equation Practice

Introduction
Frequency is the number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit of time. It is also referred
to as temporal frequency, which emphasizes the contrast to spatial frequency and angular
frequency. Frequency is measured in units of hertz (Hz) which is equal to one occurrence of a
repeating event per second.

Remember the three-step process:

• Write down the equation you are
Example going to use.
What is the wave speed when the frequency is • Substitute the quantities from the
20Hz with a wave length of 3m? question into your formula and carry
• Wave speed = Frequency X Wave length
out the calculation.
• Wave speed = 20Hz X 3m
• = 60m/s
• Write down the answer and don't
forget to use the correct unit.
Describe how the frequency of the water waves in
the ripple tank can be measured.
