Remember The Three-Step Process:: Example

1) Density is calculated by dividing an object's mass by its volume. 2) An example calculates the density of an object with a mass of 10g and volume of 5cm3 to be 2 g/cm3. 3) A student used equipment to measure the mass of a ball (15g) and volume displaced in water (45cm3) to calculate its density.

Physics Equation Practice

Introduction
Mass is a measure of how heavy something is and is usually measured in grams (g) or kilograms
(kg). Volume is a measure of how much space something takes up and is usually measured in
cubic centimetres or cubic metres . Density is a measure of how tightly the mass of an object is
packed into the space it takes up, so we calculate this by dividing its mass by its volume.

Remember the three-step process:

• Write down the equation you are
Example going to use.
What is the density of an object with a • Substitute the quantities from the
mass of 10g and a volume of 5cm³? question into your formula and carry
• Density = Mass / Volume out the calculation.
• Density = 10g / 5cm³ • Write down the answer and don't
• =2 g/cm³ forget to use the correct unit.

A student used the equipment in the diagram to

help calculate the density of a ball. It has a mass of
15g and it displaces 45cm³ of water. What is the
density of the ball?
