Green It

Green IT aims to reduce the environmental impact of information technology. As IT usage has increased, so have carbon dioxide emissions from data centers. Green IT practices like virtualization, power management, material recycling, and telecommuting can help lower emissions and energy usage. Virtualization consolidates server resources to reduce hardware needs. Power management automates power saving modes. Recycling programs reuse and repurpose old electronics. Telecommuting reduces employee travel through remote work and teleconferencing. Adopting these green IT strategies can help organizations save money while lowering their carbon footprint.

GREEN IT

GREEN CONCEPT TO GREEN IT

• Traffic jam n space problem
• Air ,water , land and sound pollution
• Stressful , painful working hours
• Global warming and climatic change
• Electronic waste
EFFECT OF IT
• In recent years, as the use of IT devices has skyrocketed so have the related
carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions
• particularly because of the large amounts of energy consumed by data
centers, places where large numbers of computers and related hardware are
housed.
• This increase of IT-related CO2 emissions is getting recognized as a
problem that could contribute to the acceleration of global warming.
WHAT IS GREEN IT ?
• Green computing or green IT, refers to environmentally sustainable
computing or IT.
• The study and practice of using resources in an efficient , effective
economic ways.
• It is "the study and practice of designing, manufacturing, using, and
disposing of computers, servers, and associated subsystems—such as
monitors, printers, storage devices, and networking and communications
systems—efficiently and effectively with minimal or no impact on the
environment.
EXAMPLES OF GREEN IT
• Energy saving
• Disposal of electronic waste
• Virtualization of server resources
• Telecommuting
• End user satisfaction
• Return on investment
WHY GREEN IT ?
WHY GREEN IT
• It saves money
• Reduce carbon emission
• It’s not a choice but a necessity
• Sustain growth
• Improved reputation and brand value
• Inspire employees
• Lower exposure to energy prices
• High performance
EARLY INITIATIVE OF GREEN IT
• Energy Star: program launched
by US environmental protection
agency for adoption of sleep
mode among consumer
electronics

• TCO Development: Swedish

organization launched TCO
development program to promote
low magnetic n electric emission
for CRT based computer display
APPROACHES TO GREEN IT
• Virtualization

• Power Management

• Material Recycling

• Telecommuting
VIRTUALIZATION
• Data centers consumes a lot energy
• Many server computers run at less than 30 % of their capacity
• Wastage of resources and energy
• A common solution would be running a mix of jobs and application on a
single server is double the amount of work the processor does
• This can be done by virtualization
• Reduce amount of equipment and spaces
• Liberates the redundant machine for recycling or reuse
VIRTUALIZATION
• Process of running two or more logical computer systems on one set of
hardware.
VIRTUALIZATION
• Lower power and cooling consumption
• Reduce number of machine or server
• Application isolation
• Can be coupled with physical computer n storage devices
POWER MANAGEMENT
• The APCI ( the advanced power and configuration interface) an open
industry standard, allows an operating system to directly control the power
saving aspects of its underlying hardware.
• This allows system to automatically switch off monitors or hard disks after
certain period of inactivity and also provide the option of hibernation
• ENERGY STAR 4 compliant pc’s are 90 % efficient
• ENERGY STAR 4 compliant servers are 92 % efficient
MATERIAL RECYCLING
• Computer systems that have
outlived their particular function
can be repurposed, or donated to
various charities and non-profit
organizations
• parts from outdated systems may
be salvaged and recycled
• Computing supplies, such as
printer cartridges, paper, and
batteries may be recycled as well
TELECOMMUTING
• An estimation: a 44 international employee trip for project from Oregon to
Singapore leads to 145 metric ton of carbon emission
• This can be prevented by using telepresence n teleconference solutions
• Employee can also work from home
TELECOMMUTING
TELEPRESENCE
TELECOMPUTING
• Less carbon emission due to travel
• Increased worker satisfaction
• Increased profit margin
• Lower over head cost for office space, heat, lighting, etc
The future lies in going green
