Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including
figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of
specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language of a court opinion
differs from that of a newspaper).
Denotation vs. Connotation
The denotative meaning of a word is its actual dictionary
definition.
◦ Example: The literal meaning.
◦ Determined: having made a firm decision and being resolved
not to change it.
• The Connotative meaning of a word is the feeling it gives.
• There are three types of connotation: Positive, Neutral, and Negative

Word Choice

is towards a topic, which also helps us determine the
author’s point (AKA MAIN IDEA)
