Shading Design: Horizontal Shading Angle (HSA)

The document provides steps for designing a sunshade for a building in Bela, Bihar, India. It involves determining the time periods when shading is required, calculating the horizontal and vertical shading angles based on the sun's azimuth and altitude at different times, and using the minimum angles to size horizontal and vertical shading devices. For the western facade, a horizontal shading device with a depth of 480mm is designed based on the lowest horizontal shading angle of -141.44 degrees. For the southern facade, a vertical shading device with a depth of 590mm is designed based on the lowest vertical shading angle of 68.53 degrees.

SHADING DESIGN

Horizontal Shading Angle (HSA)

HSA = Azimuth angle - window orientation

Vertical Shading Angle (VSA)

VSA = tan -1 [tan (Altitude)/ cos (HSA) ]

Sunshade design for building at Bela, Bihar

Step 1 – Determine the period of year when shading is required

1st April to 31st August

In this period, Longest sun path is on 21st June and shortest sun path is on 1st April

Step 2 – Determine the time duration when shading is required at different facades

Southern and Western facades have to be shaded

Southern facade– 11 am to 5 pm (1st April – shortest sun path)

Western façade – 12 pm to 5 pm (21st June – Longest sun path)
Step 3 – Find Azimuth and Altitude angles for these dates every hour and find HSA and VSA

HSA for designing Vertical shading device – Western façade (21st June)

WEST 12:00 PM 1:00 PM 2:00 PM 3:00 PM 4:00 PM 5:00 PM

Azimuth 128.56 -101.27 -90.33 -84.70 -79.94 -75.91

Altitude 85.95 79.21 65.80 52.34 38.99 25.84

HSA -141.44 -371.27 -360.33 -354.7 -349.94 -345.91

VSA for designing Horizontal shading device – Southern façade - 1st April

SOUTH 11:00 AM 12:00 PM 1:00 PM 2:00 PM 3:00 PM 4:00 PM 5:00 PM

Azimuth 136.47 169.13 -152.10 -126.42 -111.63 -101.88 -94.35

Altitude 61.84 68.18 66.10 57.16 45.34 32.44 19.12

HSA -43.53 -10.87 -332.1 -306.42 -291.63 -281.88 -274.35

VSA 68.78 68.53 68.62 69.05 69.99 72.10 77.76

Step 4 – Determine the time duration when shading is required at different facades

Design the depth of the shading based on the Lowest Possible HSA (Vertical shading device) and Lowest
Possible VSA (Horizontal shading device) for a window of height 1500mm

Shading device is designed for HSA of -141.44 (Lowest is considered )

Shading device is designed for VSA of 68.53 (Lowest is considered )

East & West façade shading

Width of window – 1200 mm

With HSA -141.44° and depth of sunshade 480mm, window is fully shaded during summer solstice
South façade shading

Depth = width / tan (VSA)

= 1200 / tan (68.53)= 1200/ 2.542

Depth of vertical sunshade= 590mm
