A Project Report On "Smart Dustbin" Submitted To V.P.M.P. Polytechnic, Gandhinagar Department of Computer Engineering

This document describes a project to create a smart dustbin using Arduino. The smart dustbin uses an ultrasonic sensor to detect objects near the lid and a servo motor to automatically open the lid when waste is to be disposed. The project aims to help keep the environment clean as part of the Swachh Bharat mission. When the ultrasonic sensor detects an object within a certain distance, the Arduino activates the servo motor to lift the lid open for a set time before closing it again. This prevents overflow and helps manage waste collection efficiently.

• ABSTRACT :-
• In the recent decades, Urbanization has increased tremendously. At the same phase there is an increase in waste production.
Waste management has been a crucial issue to be considered.
• So the main objective of the project is to design a smart dustbin which will help in keeping our environment clean and also eco
friendly. We are inspired from Swaach Bharat Mission. Nowadays technologies are getting smarter day-by-day so, as to clean the
environment we are designing a smart dustbin by using Arduino. This smart dustbin management system is built on the
microcontroller based system having ultrasonic sensors on the dustbin.

INTRODUCTION
• Dustbins are small plastic containers that are used to store
trash on a temporary basis. They are often used in homes,
offices, streets, parks etc. to collect the waste.
• Usually, it is a common practice to use separate bins for
collecting wet or dry, recyclable or non-recyclable waste.
• In this project, We have designed a simple system called Smart
Dustbin using Arduino, Ultrasonic Sensor and Servo Motor,
where the lid of the dustbin will automatically open itself upon
detection of human hand.
• Most of the cities, towns and villages in India are not well designed to
facilitate the suitable garbage collection methods.
• Common Public dustbins are filling over with the garbage and no one is
concerned to clear them up as and when they get completely packed with
overflowing garbage.
• Keeping in view of this big problem, it will be a good suggestion to do
something to deal with this unmanaged waste and from this, the concept
of ‘Smart Dustbin’ came out.
Concept of smart dustbin

• The main concept behind the Smart Dustbin using Arduino project
is Object Detection. We have used Ultrasonic Sensor in object
avoiding robot, where upon detecting an object, the Robot will
change its course of direction.
• A similar method is implemented here, where the Ultrasonic Sensor
is placed on top of the dustbin’s lid and when the sensor detects
any object like a human hand, it will trigger Arduino to open the lid.
• Keeping in view of this big problem, it will be a good suggestion to do
something to deal with this unmanaged waste and from this, the concept
of ‘Smart Dustbin’ came out.
APPARATUS
• Arduino UNO
• HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Sensor Module
• TowerPro SG90 Servo Motor
• Connecting Wires
• 5V Power Supply
• A small dustbin with hinged lid
• Miscellaneous (glue, plastic tube, etc.)
How to Build a Smart Dustbin using Arduino?
(Connecting the Servo motor)

• In order to open the lid, we have fixed a small plastic tube to the servo horn using instant
glue.
• The Servo Motor Is Used as to open the dustbin it require more energy and sensor is
used to detect when to open & lose the lid.

working
• After setting up the Smart Dustbin and making all the necessary
connections, upload the code to Arduino and provide 5V power
supply to the circuit. Once the system is powered ON, Arduino
keeps monitoring for any object near the Ultrasonic Sensor.
• If the Ultrasonic Sensor detects any object like a hand for
example, Arduino calculates its distance and if it less than a
certain predefined value, Arduino will activate the Servo Motor
and with the support of the extended arm, it will list the lid open.
• After certain time, the lid is automatically closed.
advantages
• Following are the advantages of using Smart
dustbin:
• A reduction in the number of waste collections
needed by up to 80%, resulting in less
manpower, emissions, fuel use and traffic
congestion.
• A reduction in the number of waste bins needed
Benefits to the Village
• Overflowing of dustbins can be stopped
• The overflowing and cleaning of smart bins will be
continuously monitored and effectively managed thus
making clean and empty bins available to common people.
• Economically Effective technique if once implemented
successfully.
• It also intends at building a clean as well as green
surroundings
Benefits to the Institute
• Through such kind of technological advancements our Institution can
promote National level schemes like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Digital
India etc.
• This technique can also be implemented in our institute to keep its
campus clean and healthy.
• Customization of such kind of techniques in our campus can motivate
our students to think about the latest innovation in technical
domains.
• Students can start their own start ups in which they can make such
kind of commercial products .
Future Enhancements
• Coordination among the Dustbins.
• Cloud Platform and Raspberry Pi can be used for Data Storage and Data
Analysis.
• Daily Produce of waste can be monitored.
• Smart dustbin helps us to reduce the pollution. Many times garbage
dustbin is overflow and many animals like dog or rat enters inside or
near the dustbin.
• To enhance it further, an automated system can be developed which is
able to pick up waste in and around the bin, segregate them and put
them in respective bins.
Result
• If the dustbin is not cleaned in specific time, then the record
is sent to the higher authority who can take appropriate
action against the concerned contractor.
• This system also helps to monitor the fake reports and hence
can reduce the corruption in the overall management
system.
• A waste collecting and monitoring team which is deployed
for collection of garbage from the city can be guided in a well
manner for collection.
CONCLUSION
• A simple but useful project called Smart Dustbin
using Arduino is designed and developed here.
• Using this project, the lid of the dustbin stays
closed to avoid flies and mosquitoes, so that
waste is not exposed and when you want dispose
any waste, it will automatically open the lid.
