6.5 Urban Models (Notes)

The document summarizes several models of urban structure: - The concentric zone model depicts zones of wealth radiating from the city center. - The sector model shows development along transportation corridors like rail lines. - The multiple nuclei model features various activity nodes rather than just the downtown. - Edge city/peripheral models involve suburbs and commercial areas forming around highways outside the city core. The document compares these models to Tampa's development, noting wealth tends to decrease as distance from downtown increases, but major activity centers have also formed along transportation corridors.

5 STRUCTURE
OF CITIES
(URBAN MODELS)
APHG
Mr. M
LESSON OBJECTIVES

You will be able to identify the major models that explain the
6.5 structure of cities.

You will be able to explain the strengths and weaknesses of

6.5 these models.

You will compare these models to the Tampa area to see

Apply which models best describe the city structure.
NORTH AMERICAN CITY MODELS
BASED ON CITIES IN THE US PREDOMINANTLY
ESS CONCENTRIC ZONE MODEL
• Created by Ernest Burgess in 1925
• Based on Chicago
• Burgess created this model to see
where different groups in cities live
and why
• Found that the poorest residents lived
near the CBD and wealth increased as
you moved farther away
Discuss
• Similar to what other model?
• Problems with this model?
HOYT SECTOR
MODEL
• Homer Hoyt 1939
• Also based on Chicago
• Found that the city was growing
outward
• Growth was focused along railroad
lines, forming wedges outward

Discuss:
• How is it similar to Burgess Model?
• Problems with this model?
MULTIPLE NUCLEI MODEL
• Chauncy Harris and Edward
Ulman 1945
• They found the city layout
changed due to the car
• Various socioeconomic groups
gathered around various nodes
or focal points, not just the
CBD
Discuss
• Is this better than previous
models? Why?
• What are major points of
interest here in the Tampa Area?
Borchert’s Epochs of Transportation Model

• Based on the idea

that cities have
expanded over
time due to
transportation
technology.
• Cities start very
small and expand
due to railroads,
then cars, then
highways
HARRIS PERIPHERAL
MODEL
• Chauncy Harris, 1960s
• People moving away from city to
the suburbs
• Development around “ring roads”
or highways that surround the city
• Businesses move from the CBD
to the ring road creating Edge
Cities
• CBD still exists but is less
important
Discuss
• Similar to other models?
GALACTIC CITY OR EDGE CITY MODEL
EXACT SAME AS HARRIS PERIPHERY MODEL
Tyson’s Corner (Edge City of Washington DC)
CITY MODELS OUTSIDE OF
NORTH AMERICA
EUROPEAN CITIES
• European Cities: Opposite of N.
American cities with wealthy
near CBD and poor on the outside
of the city
• Residents to prefer locations near
the downtown commercial areas,
much less emphasis on cars
• High density, few suburbs, cities
surrounded by green spaces and
farms
EUROPEAN CITIES VS.
AMERICAN CITIES
LATIN AMERICAN CITY
MODEL
• Griffen-Ford, 1980
• Similar to which model?
• Two major features
• “Spine” extends from CBD outward
• Wealthiest residents live in gated areas
along the Spine.
• Highly segregated based on wealth
• Squatter Settlements on the outside
• Poorest residents live on land that they do
not own
• Result of large scale rural to urban
migration
• Government cannot or will not provide
services/infrastructure so largely ignores
these areas
SQUATTER SETTLEMENTS
Life in Squatter Settlements or Favelas
AFRICAN AND ASIAN CITIES
• Both are highly segregated and often port cities due to
European colonization and export of resources
• African City Model
• Has multiple CBDs
• Segregated heavily by race (colonial European vs. African)
• Squatter settlements on the outside

• Asian City Model

• Revolves around the port rather than CBD
• City extends outward from the port
APPLICATION: WHICH TWO MODELS BEST
APPLY TO TAMPA?
Using the maps provided here and/or any maps you find on the Internet I want you two
decide which two models of urban development from North America best describe the city
and surrounding area of Tampa.
• Using your notes, the maps provided and/or Internet resources, list the two models that
best fit Tampa
• For each model, explain the following (yes 3 sentences each):
• What are the basic ideas or premises of this model (describe the model itself)
• What evidence (based on maps or research) supports the idea that this model
describes Tampa?
• No model perfectly describes a city, so use evidence to explain where the model
falls short describing Tampa.
• Several maps are included at the end of this PPT to help you if you wish to use them for
evidence.
