Radio Wave

Hertz conducted an experiment to generate radio waves by using a transmitter with two spherical electrodes connected to an induction coil. When a voltage was applied, it caused sparks to move between the electrodes, producing oscillating electric currents that generated radio pulses. These pulses were received by a loop several yards away and exhibited properties of reflection, refraction, and diffraction similar to light waves. Hertz's experiment proved that radio waves are a form of electromagnetic wave and measured their speed.

A. Identify the micro and
macro effect of
diminished source of
radio waves from our
home?
Session Agenda
Radio Waves
● An electromagnetic wave with frequency of
about Hertz (Hz)
● Commonly used in radio and television
communication systems;
● Can be created by the oscillating electric
current in radio antennas
Radio Waves

In 1887 , Heinrich Hertz generated

radio pulses in his laboratory to prove
Maxwell’s prediction that light is a
form of electromagnetic wave.
Generation of Radio Waves
Experiment
In his experiment , he used transmitter
made of two spherical electrodes
connected to an induction coil.The
electrodes are separated by a tiny gaps.
Generation of Radio Waves
Experiment
● A receiver loop , containing two
electrodes , was place several yards
away from the transmitter
● Voltage is supplied to the circuit
Generation of Radio Waves
Experiment
● One electrode is positive while the
other is negative due to the voltage
surge provided by the coil
Generation of Radio Waves
Observations
● When voltage is supplied to the circuit , current was induced in the
loop sending sparks across the gap
● The sparks move back and forth through the electrodes
● The radio puse was generated by the oscillating free charges in the
transmitter
● Sparks was induced in the receiver loop
● The radio pulses generated exhibit properties that are similar to light
waves such as interference,diffraction,reflection,refraction and
polarization
● They only differ in frequency and wavelength
Generation of Radio Waves
Conclusions
● In his experiment , he was able to find the speed of electromagnetic
waves which is also the same with light
● Electromagnetic waves can be reflected, refracted and diffracted.
Generation of Radio Waves
SUMMARY
● Hertz created a set up where he used transmitter made of two spherical
electrodes connected to an induction coil with a tiny gap between them
● Radio wave was produced when the sparks moving back and forth
through the electrodes in the transmitter causes changes in the electric
and magnetic field
● His set up was able to produce radio pulse with the same properties as
a light wave with different frequency and wavelength
