Rotational Symmetry

The document discusses rotational and reflection symmetry. It defines rotational symmetry as when a shape looks the same after some rotation in increments of 360 degrees divided by its order of symmetry. Examples are given of common shapes with different orders of rotational symmetry from 1 to 8. Reflection symmetry is defined as when a shape is identical on both sides of a line of symmetry passing through its center. Common shapes are shown with their lines of reflection symmetry.

Rotational and Reflection

symmetry
What’s a symmetry?
 a meaning of symmetry defines that one shape is exactly
like the other shape when it is moved, rotated, or flipped
What is Rotational Symmetry?
 A shape has Rotational Symmetry when it still looks the same after
some rotation, or in other words if an object is rotated and the result
looks exactly the same as the original, it has rotational symmetry

For
example:

Now Let’s look how we can draw a shape if its order is
given

First we pick a point as the centre of rotation

For rotational symmetry of order 2:

Then we rotate the shape by 360 ÷ 2 = 180

180°
For rotational symmetry of order 5:
We rotate the shape by 360 ÷ 5 = 72

72°
What is reflection symmetry?
 It’s a type of symmetry where one half
is the reflection of the other half.

For example:
Lines of Symmetries
• The line of symmetry can be defined as the axis or imaginary line that passes
through the center of the shape or object and divides it into identical halves.

For example: Lines of
