Lesson 4 - Multiplying A Fraction and Whole Number and Another Fraction

The document provides examples for multiplying a fraction and a whole number, and multiplying two fractions. It first shows how to calculate 1/4 of 12 marbles, which is 3 marbles, by dividing 12 into 4 equal groups to get 1/4 of the total. It also shows the calculation as 1/4 x 12 = 3. The second example calculates how many kg of pork was used to make pinakbet, given that the mother bought 4/5 of a pork and used 1/2 of it. It illustrates that 1/2 of 4/5 is 2/10 and reduces to 1/5 kg. The document provides guidance on setting up fraction multiplication by multiplying the numerators

Multiplying a Fraction and a

Whole Number and Another Fraction

LESSON 4
Problem1: Marcus has 12 marbles. He gave 1/4 of his
marbles to his friend Arnold. How many marbles did
Arnold receive?

Marcus divides his marbles into four. Each

group represent ¼ of his 12 marbles.

Looking at the illustration, we can say that

1/4 of 12 is 3. Therefore,

Marcus gave 3 marble to Arnold

Another way to solve the problem is through

computation. 4 𝑜𝑓 12𝑖𝑠 𝑡h𝑒 𝑠𝑎𝑚𝑒 𝑎𝑠 4 𝑥 12=𝑛
Express the whole number as a  1 12
Step 1 𝑥 =𝑛

𝑥 =
Step 2 Multiply the numerators 4 1 ❑

Multiply the denominators  112 12
Step 3 𝑥 =

Problem 2: Mother bought 4/5 of pork. She used ½ of it to
cook pinakbet. How man kg of pork did she use to make
pinakbet?

Solution 1:
Solution 2:

Based on the illustration above, there are double 5 2 10
shaded parts that represents the amount of
pork mother used for pinakbet.
Thus, mother used kg of pork. Reduce to lowest term  4 2
