INVESTIGATION OF EGG
SHELL POWDER AS PARTIAL
REPLACEMENT WITH
CEMENT IN CONCRETE
AIM
Consumption of cement can be reduced significantly if eggshell powder
used as a partial replacement without compromising performance
characteristics of concrete including durability.
The scope of study is to establish to achieve the objectives and this study
will be mainly concentrated on experimental works.
Experiments regarding compression strength and split tensile strength on
the partial replacement of egg shell powder in concrete will be carried out
in order to study the behavior of concrete.
All testing methods and procedure are specified according to Indian
Standard
MATERIALS USED
CEMENT
Ordinary Portland Cement of 53grade confirming to IS 12269- 1987 was used in this study.
River sand confirming to grading zone III of Is 383-1970 was used as a fine aggregate.
Well graded coarse aggregate passing through 20mm sieve according to IS 383-1970 was
used.
EGG SHELL POWDER
Eggshell consists of several mutually growing layers of CaCO3, the innermost layer-
maxillary 3 layer grows on the outermost egg membrane and creates the base on which
palisade layer constitutes the thickest part of the eggshell.
The top layer is a vertical layer covered by the organic cuticle. The eggshell primarily
contains calcium, magnesium carbonate (lime) and protein. In many other countries, it is the
accepted practice for eggshell to be dried and use as a source of calcium in animal feeds.

Saturated surface dry specimens were kept in a hot air oven at 105oC until a

Permeable voids in concretes were evaluated using the following formula.

The egg shells as a useful material instead of a waste material (harm to the environment) that
they were hurled in many hundred tons annually had been use in an engineering applications.
The hardness and specific gravity were increased with increasing ESP.
Compressive strength increases with increase of percentage of Egg shell powder up to certain
limit.
Better mechanical and physical properties of concrete can be obtained with the replacement of
cement with
Egg shell powder in mix.
The workability of concrete is decreased by increasing the amount of Egg shell powder
The results demonstrated that, irrespective of ESP percentage replacement there was good
relationship
Between compressive strength and split tensile strength.
