Introduction to Textiles and Clothing

Apparel Product Development processes and sampling

1
Product Development Concept
• Product Development is the design and engineering required to make
products serviceable, salable, producible and profitable.
• The basic concept involved in PD may be of two types:
• Creative
• Creative design focuses on analysis and creativity.
• Technical
• Technical design which involves perfecting the style, fit and
patterns and developing detailed specifications and costs.
• The product can either be one that is new in market or one that is new
to your particular company or existing product that has been improved.

2
Product Development steps
 Designing a Collection:
• In fashion, there are two main seasons a year,
• spring/summer
• autumn/winter.
• Each season require a different look and a new range of colors and
fabric designs suitable for the time of year. To get their designs into
shops at the right time, designers have to work twelve months in
advance.
 Planning a Collection:
 Every collection is very carefully researched and planned so that all
items in it complement each other.
 Research Color Trends
 The designer plans a color story, which reflects the following:
 Season. They should be appropriate but different from last season’s
colors.

3
Product Development Steps
FABRIC SELECTION:
• Choosing a fabric suitable for a particular style is one of the
most important aspect of designing. The designer choose
fabrics on the basis of fashion trends, quality, performance,
price and suitability.
FABRIC CHARACTERISTICS:
• Fiber, weave, texture, performance, weight and hand feel etc.
Texture: Surface of fabric created by the weave and light
reflection. (design).
Performance: Refers to fabrics wearing and cleaning properties
based on fiber content, weave and finish.
Weight and feel. Dictate the silhouette of garment. A garment
must be styled in a fabric that is compatible with the described
silhouette.

4
Product Development Steps
Develop Specification Sheets (Tech Pack)
This is a construction photocopy for a product, also
known as ‘specs’.
All product measurements and other relevant detail
are recorded
Specifications: are brief , written descriptions of
materials, procedures, dimensions and performance
for a particular style. Marker width, color
combinations, trims accessories, labor cost, sewing
time and etc.

Product Development
• Developing a Sample Garment
• The Designer Tech Pack
• Records are kept for all styles
• Each designer fills out a work sheet containing information that guides the
production department
• Helps in costs and in ordering piece goods
• Factories call it fabric and findings (trimmings).
• The work sheet becomes as adoption sheet when the final line is selected.

2. The selling season for which the garment is designed
3. The sizes in which the design will be made
4. The style number assigned to design (code representing season, fabric, and
pattern)
5. A short description of the garment
6. A working sketch of the design to make it easy to identify the garment
7. The colors or color combinations in which the design is offered
