Li-Fi Technology: BY:-Abhishek Kumar B.Tech CSE 4 Year 1743110005

This document provides an overview of Li-Fi technology. It discusses how Li-Fi works by transmitting data through LED light bulbs that vary in intensity faster than the human eye can detect. The document covers the history of Li-Fi research from the 1990s, its current applications, advantages over Wi-Fi such as higher speeds and security, and future developments like using street lamps as free access points. In conclusion, the author argues that Li-Fi can overcome radio spectrum limitations and allow internet access in places where Wi-Fi is restricted.

WHAT IS LI-FI….?? ? 2

 LIFI –”LIGHT FIDEALITY” is

transmission of data through
illumination, i.e. sending data
through a LED light bulb that
varies in intensity faster than
human eye can follow.

 Li-Fi is a light based Wi-Fi it

uses light instead of radio waves to
transmit information.
HISTORY - 3

 The technology truly began during

the year 1990’s in countries like
Germany , Korea and Japan where
they discovered LED’s could be
retrofitted to send information . Prof.
Harald Hass from university of
Edinburgh. continues to wow the
world with the potential to use light
for communication
 He demonstrated in year 2012.
Present Scenario 4

  At present we have as many as 1.5million radio wave base

stations across the globe.
 We also have close to 5 billion mobile connections which
transmit a data over600TB.
 This penetration of mobile devices into our lives has led to a
wide recognition of WIFI technology.
 At present the data transmission across the globe is being done
using radio wave range of the electromagnetic spectrum
 This results in some drawbacks in the current system.
Need OF LI-FI 5
IMPLEMENTATION OF LI-FI 6

 The LI-FI product consists of three primary sub assemblies

A. Emitter
B. RF Driver
C. Power Supply
HOW LI-FI WORKS- 7

 Operational procedure is very simple, if the LED is

on, you transmit a digit 1, if its off you transmit a
digit 0.
 the LED’s can be switched on and off quickly,
which gives nice opportunities for transmitting
data. hence all that us required is some LEDS and a
controller that code data into those LEDs.
 We have to just vary the rate at which the LEDs
flicker depending upon the data we want to encode.
 Thus every light source will work as a hub for data
transmission.
Electromagnetic Spectrum 8

o Gama rays cant be used as they could be dangerous.

o X-rays have similar health issues.
o Ultraviolet light is good for place without people, but otherwise dangerous for the
human body.
o Infrared, due to eye safety regulation, can only be used with low power.

So The Only Option isTHE VISIBLE-LIGHTSPECTRUM.

APPLICATIONS - 11

 Used for modern medical instruments.

 In aircrafts, it can be used for data transmission.
 Homes and Small Office.
 In traffic signals, LI-FI can be used which will
communicate with the LED lights of the car and
number of accidents can be decreased.
 Location based services:-GPS
 Underwater communication.
 RF Spectrum relief.
 Li-Fi can be used effectively in the places where it is
difficult to lay the optical fiber cable.
Traffic lights 12

Traffic light can communicate to the car and with each others. Cars have LED based
headlights, LED based back light , and cars can communicate with each other and prevent
accident by exchanging information.
Hospital (In Few Medical Equipments) 13

There are advantages for using VLC in hospitals and in healthcare. Mobile phones and Wi
Fi are undesirable in certain parts of hospitals, especially around MRI scanners and in
operating theatres.
Airlines 14

Whenever we travel through airways we face the problem in communication media

,because the whole airways communication are on the basis of radio waves. To overcome
this drawback on radiowave , li-fi is introduced. performed
On Ocean Beds 15

Li-Fi can even wok underwater were Wi-Fi fails completely, thereby throwing open
endless opportunities for military/navigation operations.
Street Lamps(As Free Access ) 16

There are millions of street lamps developed around the world.

Each of these street lamps could be a free access point.
ADVANTAGES - 17

 Larger bandwidth.
 High efficiency.
 More availability.
 High security.
 Thousands and millions of street lamps can be converted to
Li-Fi spots.
 No license needed.
 Green information technology.
 Lighting points used as Hotspots.
 The issues of the shortage of radio frequency
bandwidth may be sorted out by Li-Fi.
 This technology worldwide can be used for every street
lamp would be a free data access points.
FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS - 18

 Efficient alternative to radio-based wireless.

 Li-Fi is an emerging technology which is quick and reliable.

 Air waves are clogged so let’s use light waves.

 Hence, let’s proceed to Li- Fi for a brighter ,cheaper and greener future.
CONCLUSION - 19

 Overcomes the limitations of radio spectrum.

 High speed of 10Gbps can be achieved.
 The possibilities are numerous and can be explored further.
 If this technology can be put into practical use, every bulb can be used something like
a Wi-Fi hotspot.
 we will proceed toward the cleaner, greener, safer and brighter future.
 This may solve issues such as the shortage of radio-frequency bandwidth.
 Allows internet where traditional radio based wireless isn’t allowed such as aircraft or
hospitals
 LI-FI is enabled by advance digital transmission technologies
