Lecture 10 - Functional Movement Screen - BLANKS

The document discusses the Functional Movement Screen (FMS), which is a series of tests used to identify movement deficiencies, compensatory patterns, and asymmetries. The FMS aims to reduce injury risk and improve performance by identifying individuals at risk of injury and their movement asymmetries. The document provides guidance on how to assess movement using the various tests of the FMS and how to develop exercise prescriptions to address any issues identified.

FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT

SCREEN
KIN 382.3 March 17th, 2014
What is FMS?
 Series of tests directed at finding:
 Movement deficiencies
 Compensatory movement patterns
 Asymmetries

 Also referred to as Physical Competency

What do we see?
What do we see?
Movement Analysis
 Fix the problem…before it is a problem

“Never load asymmetries”

Where are the asymmetries?

Who Is FMS For?
 Performance
 Fitness
Should this CPT prescribe
 Rehab this exercise to this client?
- How do you know?

 Daily Living
Role of FMS in Training & Treatment
 Treatment – think of this as prescription
 What it DOES:
 Bridges gap between therapy and fitness (prevention)
 Assess functional mobility and stability
 Complements other tests and observations
 What it DOES NOT DO:
 Always directly correlate fitness and performance
measures
 Only test for flexibility
 Replace what you currently use
 Diagnose injury
Goals of FMS
 Reduce likelihood of injury
 Improve performance
 HOW?
 Identify those at risk (easy)
 Determine asymmetries (easy)
 Design an appropriate prescription (not so easy!)
How Do You Assess Movement?
 Squatting
 Stepping
 Lunging
 Reaching
 Leg Raising
 Push Up
 Rotary Stability
The FMS is NOT the answer to all questions!
 This is not the end, but is part of the path toward
knowledge
 You may modify or add/delete parts
 Norms issue
 It is a FILTER – how you interpret the movement is
of great importance
Scoring
 Score each movement from 0 to 3
 0 – pain with movement
 1 – inability to perform movement pattern
 2 – perform movement pattern with a compensation
 3 – perform movement pattern

Rule of Thumb – score lower

FMS in Practice
 Maximum score – 21 points
 NFL team evaluted (2007)
 <14 and AS – 11 X more likely to be injured
 18 – and AS – 3 times more likely
 Score is important but asymmetries are key
Why Does Low Score Result in Increased Chance
of Injury?

 Inefficient movement patterns – compensation

 People tend to sacrifice quality for quantity
 Movement patterns follow path of least resistance
 Compensation often leads to overuse (micro
trauma)
Now What? the hard part…
 General Rule
 Zero must be evaluated by sports medicine
 Asymmetries are priority (1’s first)
 Address mobility first – ASLR and SM
Corrective Strategies
 Isolate – find the root cause
 Soft tissue work – foam roller, masssage
 Stretch – passive, pnf?
 Self-mobilization
 Integrate – movement to correct
 Activation/pattern correct drills
 Stability with movement patters
 Warm Up – good place to integrate

Overhead Squat
 Score?
 Now what?
 prescription
