Text and Discourse
Text – It is a large unit of written language.
Discourse – It is an expression of ideas.
Alex is no stranger to poverty.
He applied as a waiter in a nearby restaurant.
Inspired by his friends, he applied for a scholarship
grant and passed the entrance exam of the most
prestigious university.
He strived hard to earn his bachelor’s degree.
Alex will graduate with honors next year.
Properties of a Well-written Text
Organization
It refers to the arrangement of ideas in a text.
You can easily follow good organization when you
create an outline of your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion
It refers to the connection of ideas and connection
between sentences and between paragraphs
Since a text is a connected discourse, we have to assure
coherence and cohesion, you need to use transitional
and cohesive devices.
For cohesion, you must organize old and new
information in your text.
You can use synonyms and antonyms, repetition of
words from previous sentences, or pronouns and
conjunctions.
Appropriate Language Use
Refers to the acceptable style of language for a
particular form of text.
For business correspondence, the style must be concise,
formal, must not use wordy phrases and must have a
courteous tone to it.
For literary pieces, the language and style may be less
formal and more creative.
Proper Mechanics
Refers to the conventions of writing which includes:
Capitalization
Punctuation
Spelling
Numerals
Abbreviation
Acronyms
Contractions
