Recap of Lesson 1:

1. Units
It is vitally important that you use the right units for the quantity that
you are referring to.
2. Base and derived quantities:
 5 base quantities (length, mass, time, temperature & current)
 Derived quantities: combination of base quantities by multiplication
or division
3. Equations/Formula
 Very important to remember the equations, and to use them
correctly
 Final answer must have unit and given to 2 or 3 significant figures
Recap of Lesson 2:
1. Measuring instruments are used to get results for an experiment.
1. Eg: metre rule, thermometer, electronic scale, measuring cylinder
2. Length is measured using:

3. Time is measured using:

LO: Determining density of a regular-shaped object
SC:
Must – Measure mass of an object using an electronic balance
Should – Recall and use the equation density =
Could – Carry out an experiment to determine density of a regular-
shaped object
Density
The ‘floatability’ of an object is based on its DENSITY.
Density can be described as the degree of
compactness of a substance.
Mass
Mass is the amount of
material that a body contains.
It is measured using a beam
balance.
SI unit = kg
Density

Density can be calculated by dividing its mass by its volume.

In other words,
Practical activity 1 : Density of water

In pairs, discuss on the steps you will take to determine the

density of water.
Remember the formula
  𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠
𝐷𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 =
𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒

Think of how you will get the measurement.

What apparatus will you use?
You will find that the density of
water is 1.0 g/cm3
In conclusion:
It floats if its density is less
than 1.0 g/cm3
It sinks if its density if more
than 1.0 g/cm3

Can you guess the density of

your object?
What is meant by relative density?
Ratio of density of an object to the
density of a fluid (water)
Relative density = Density of object

Water has a
