What is coating ?
A coating is a covering that is applied to the surface of an object, usually
referred to as the substrate.
The purpose of applying the coating may be decorative, functional, or both.
The coating itself may be an all-over coating, completely covering the
substrate, or it may only cover parts of the substrate.

Protective Coating Definition
Protective Coating is using coatings to control corrosion and
the economic benefits. Common corrosion control coatings are
defined and when, how, and where they should be used.
The total annual U.S. cost for organic and metallic protective coatings is $108.6 billion, according to a
NACE study. The study estimates that 50% of all corrosion costs are preventable, and approximately
85% of these are in the area of coatings. Materials commonly used in organic coatings are epoxies,
polyurethanes, or other polymers. Meanwhile, materials typically found in inorganic metallic coatings
include zinc, aluminum, and chromium.

Definition of Corrosion
Corrosion is the deterioration of a material, usually a metal,
because of a reaction its environment.
This definition is very broad and recognizes that materials, other
than steel, such as concrete, wood, and plastics, deteriorate or
corrode.

Methods of Corrosion Control
Several methods of assuring the continued viability and usability of
various structures at a minimum cost may be considered.
1. Selecting and using specific corrosion resistant materials of construction.
2. Changing or altering the environment
3. Using barrier between the structural material and the environment
4. Using cathodic protection
5. Using the principles of corrosion allowance or overdesign
There are advantages, disadvantages, and areas of the most
economical use for each of these methods.
11
Corrosion Resistant Materials
• The use of corrosion resistant materials is most often
indicated in the original design of structures of piece
of equipment.
Cathodic Protection
• Cathodic protection – a reversal of the corrosion
process whereby sufficient electrons are maintained
on any metal surface to prevent the metal from going
into solution – can only be used for immersion or
underground conditions.
13
Design Allowance
• Overdesign for corrosion conditions becoming less
commons as other corrosion prevention methods
have becomes more practical and less costly.

Protective Coating Properties
• Water Resistance
• Chemical Resistance
• Proper adhesion
• Abrasion Resistance
• Ability to Expand and Contract
• Weather Resistance
• Resistance to Dirt Pickup
• Resistance to Bacteria and Fungus Pleasing Appearance
• Age Resistance
• Easy Application
16
Protective Coating Properties
• Water Resistance
To perform effectively, a corrosion-resistance coating must be characterized by many essential
properties.
• Chemical Resistance
Resistance to ionic passage is also a contributing factor to chemical resistance, although the two
properties are not necessarily the same.
• Proper adhesion
A corrosion resistant coating must also be highly adherent.
• Abrasion Resistance
Coatings which are applied to ships, helicopter decks barges offshore platform and other similar
areas are excellent examples of why many corrosion resistant coatings also require abrasion
resistance.
17
Protective Coating Properties
• Ability to Expand and Contract
Each coating materials has a different coefficient of expansion.
• Weather Resistance
Temperature's cycling is also a part of weather resistance.
• Resistance to Dirt Pickup
Dirt pickup is a property that concern appearance more than anything else
• Resistance to Bacteria and Fungus
There ate two ways in which bacterial and fungus an affect a coating.
18
Protective Coating Properties
• Pleasing Appearance
The earlier mentioned characteristics of weather resistance, dirt retention and biologic action, all
contribute to a coatings appearance.
• Age Resistance
To feasibly provide corrosion resistance, a coating must provide protection for a reasonable
period of time.
• Easy Application
Application is one of the most important coating characteristic, especially when dealing with
intricate structures with many corniness, edges recesses and similar areas.

Protective Coating Roles
There are many different types of protective coatings and more in constant development.
We cannot expect to know everything there is to know about modern coatings nor to keep up with the changes
Learning to read and understand the manufacturer’s technical data sheets is essential.
