Data Interpretation-Bar Graphs: Prep Smart, Score Better

1. The document provides tips for interpreting bar graphs, including scanning headings to understand the x-axis, y-axis, and their relationship. It emphasizes interpreting only what is necessary to answer questions. 2. Examples are given of easy questions that just require interpreting bar graph data, such as comparing bar lengths. 3. It notes that sometimes calculating one question can help with another.

DATA INTERPRETATION- BAR GRAPHS

IMPORTANT TIPS-
• Before you solve any of the questions, first you have to understand what the Bar Graph is trying to say. Make a habit
of scanning the headings first. You have to understand what’s on the X-axis, what’s on the Y-axis, what’s the relation
between these two in terms of the length of Bars

• Interpret what’s necessary!

• These sort of questions are pretty easy to solve. Just interpret the data in your mind. Check the length of the
Bars. The answer will surely come.

• Sometimes the calculation of one questions helps in the calculation of some other question.

1.Refer the below for the Question

What is the percentage increase in the rice production in the year 2013 as compared to peas production in
the year 2017?

A) 78.23% B) 55.62% C) 66.67% D) 83.45% E) None of these

Correct Ans:(C)66.67%
Explanation:
Rice production in the year 2013 = 70 million tonnes

Peas production in the year 2017 = 42 million tonnes

Required percentage increase = {(Difference between Rice production in

2013 and Peas production in 2017) / Peas production in 2017} * 100%
={(70-42)/42}*100%
=(28/42)*100%
= 66.67%
2.Refer the below for the Question

The value of export in 1997 is what percentage of the average value of imports in the year 1996,1997,1998 ?

A) 66.66% B) 150% C) 90% D) 120% E) None of these

Correct Ans: (B)150%
Explanation:
From Bar chart:
Given, Value of export in 1997 = 4.5 $ million

Average value of imports in the year 1996,1997,1998 = (Sum of value of imports in

the year 1996,1997,1998) / Number of years
= (3.75+3 + 2.25 ) / 3
=9/3
= 3 $ million

Required % = (Value of export in 1997 / Average value of imports in the year

1996,1997,1998) * 100%
= (4.5 / 3) * 100%
= 150%
3.Study the following bar chart carefully and answer the question given.

The bar graph given below gives the information about soldiers recruited (in thousand) in three different forces
(Army, Airforce, and Navy) in six different years.

In the year 2014, the number of female soldiers recruited in Army, Airforce, and Navy were in the ratio of 2:
3: 5 respectively. In that year, 75% of the total number of soldiers recruited in Army, Navy, and Airforce
together were males then what was the total number of Female soldiers recruited in Army and Navy
together
A) 16625
B)15650
C)17575
D)18250
E) None of these
Correct Option: A
In the year 2014,

The total number of soldiers recruited = (30 + 45 + 20)

thousand = 95 thousand

The total number of female soldiers (100 – 75)% of 95000 =

25% of 95000 = 23750

The total number of female soldiers recruited in Airforce

= 3 × 23750/10 = 7125

The total number of female soldiers recruited in Army and Navy

together = (23750 – 7125) = 16625

Hence, option A is correct.

4.Study the following bar chart carefully and answer the question given.

Below chart shows the City wise Population Below chart shows percentage of Male population out of
in thousands.  total population of that particular village.
Total Population In thousands  Percentage of Males

Population of City F is 25% more than population of Village E. If the ratio of Males to Females in F is 7 : 8,
then Females of City F is what percent of Females of City A ?
A)343.43%
B)437.63%
C)369.69%
D)363.63%
E)400%
Correct Option: D
Population of City F = 45,000 × 125/100 = 56,250

Ratio of Male to Females in F is 7 : 8

Females in City F = 56,250 × 8/15= 30,000

Females of City A = 15,000 × 55/100= 8250

Reqd. % = 100 × 30000/8250= 363.63 %

Hence, option D is correct.
5.Study the following bar chart carefully and answer the question given.

Correct Option: B
Number of people tested positive in March =
2100.

Number of days in March = 31

Average = 2100/31 = 67.74

Hence, option B is correct

7.Study the following bar chart carefully and answer the question given.

for each video (in thousands)

The amount paid by YouTube per 1000 subscribers is Rs. 42 and per 10000 views is Rs. 85. Find the difference
between the amount of money earned by channel A and channel B till 31st May.
A)Rs. 42246 B)Rs. 39040 C)Rs. 31983 D)Rs. 42578 E)Rs. 44212
8.Study the following bar chart carefully and answer the question given.

The bar graph given below shows the percentage distribution of the number of books of different types (A, B, C, D and
E) sold by a book shop in the year 2015.

Note : The difference between the types A books sold and type E books sold by the shop in year 2015 = 84
Percentage sale of books of different types by a shop in year 2015

The number of type B books sold in 2016 was 15% less than that of previous year. Find the number of
type B books sold in 2016 by the shop.
A)714 B)708 C)724 D)728 E)736
Correct Option: A
Let the total books sold in a year be ‘x’

So, 0.15x – 0.13x = 84

x = 4200

Type of Book Number of books sold in a year

A 15% of 4200 = 630
B 20% of 4200 = 840
C 24% of 4200 = 1008
D 28% of 4200 = 1176
E 13% of 4200 = 546

So, required number of type B books sold in 2016 by the shop = 85% of 840 = 714

Hence, option A is correct.

A) 50000 bottles
B)80000 bottles
C) 240000 bottles
D)500000 bottles
E)None of these
Correct Option: C
Percentage decline in the production of flavour Z in 2010 as compared
to the production in 2008
