Lab Manua - Rock Mechanics Lab

This document outlines various rock mechanics laboratory tests to determine key properties of rock samples including: - Protodyakonov Strength Index to measure rock hardness and resistance to failure. - Slake Durability Index to measure weathering resistance when subjected to drying and wetting cycles. - Determining bulk density, grain density, porosity, and void ratio using a pycnometer. - Measuring permeability using constant head and falling head methods. - Finding uniaxial compressive strength and other mechanical properties using a universal testing machine.

Rock Mechanics

Laboratory Manual
Core recovery percentage and Rock
quality designation (RQD)
Protodyakonov Strength
Index
O Determine the Hardness/Resistance of rock to failure by
Protodyakonov strength index.
O Determined by this method, on one hand, helps in the design of
the mine structures and on the other hand.
O It is extensively used for planning large scale rock breaking by
heavy blasting or dropping of material because of transfer from
one haulage to the other.
Slake Durability Index
O To determine the weather ability of rock.
O This test is intended to access the resistance offered by a rock
sample to weakening and disintegration when subjected to two
standard cycles of drying and wetting in a slaking fluid usually
water.
O A – mass of sample plus drum
O B - mass of the drum plus retained portion of the sample after cooling.
O C - mass of the drum plus retained portion of the sample.
O D – mass of brushed clean drum
Determination of Bulk & Grain density, Absolute
porosity and Void ratio of a rock sample by Pycnometer
Coefficient of
permeability by constant head method
Coefficient of
permeability by falling head method
Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS)
O By this testing number of mechanical properties of rock can be found like
Compressive strength, cohesion, angle of internal friction, poisons ratio, and
modulus of elasticity.
O Universal testing machine (UTM), Parallel platens and dics are required.
Tensile Strength
O The tensile strength by indirect test – Brazilian Test
Point Load Strength Index
Point load strength test is primarily an index test for strength classification
of rock materials.

The International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM)

had suggested the following methods to determine the
point load index preferably at least 10 tests per sample,
more if sample is heterogeneous or anisotropic.

1. Diametral test; 2. Axial test, 3. Block and Irregular

lump test.
Triaxial Compressive Strength
O Mechanical properties of rock can be found like Compressive
strength, cohesion, angle of internal friction, poisons ratio, and
modulus of elasticity.
Shear Strength by Punch
Non destructive tests (NDT) to
determine Young modulus (E)
O Pundit instrument which generates ultrasonic pulse with a frequency
of 50KHz to 150KHz ,
Schmidt Rebound Hardness
O Limitation: limited use on very soft or very hard rocks

The measured test values for the sample should

be ordered in descending value.

The lower 50% of the value

should be discarded and the average obtained of
the upper 50 % values.

This average shall be multiplied by

the correction factor to obtain the Schmidt
rebound hardness.
Micro‐bit drilling
O Determine Abrasivity of given rock sample.
Direct shear test
O This test is performed to determine the
consolidated-drained shear strength of a sandy to
silty soil.
