INTRODUCTION
The term Westernition is also a help in
Analyzing the socio-cultural changes taking Place in
India for the past 250 years. Concept of
“Westernization” refers to the changes in
Technology, institution, ideology and values of a
non-western society as a result of cultural contact
with the western society for a long period.
MEANING
In our Indian Society, technological changes,
establishment of educational institutions, rise of
nationalism and new political structure, may all
be described as by-products of westernization or
of the British rule of 200 years in India. Thus by
Westernization, Srinivas Primarily meant the
British impact. It is imitation of the western life
styles by the Indians.
WESTERNIZATION TAKES PLACE
AT THREE LEVELS
At the Primary level were a minority of people
who fisrt come into contact with western culture and
were its first benefici – aries.
The Secondary level of westernization refers to
those section of Indian socity who come in direct
contact with the primary beneficiaries.
At the Tertiary level are who come to know
Idirectly about the devices introduced by the
British.
DEFINITION
Westernization is the change in Indian
society due to the impact of British rule in
India. The area of change include
technology, dress, food and changes in the
habits and lifestyles of people.

CHARACTERISTICS
1. It is inclusive as it can accommodate varies
outside elements .
2. It is complex as it includes many aspects such
as behavior aspect, knowledge aspect .
3. It is multi layered as it occurs in many levels .
4. It primarily focuses on cultural change
5. It result in the introduction of new
Institution and bring changes in old
institutions.
6. It varied from region to region and
form one section of population to
another .
EFFECT OF WESTERNIZATION
1. It brought about immediate changes in the main
areas, namely technology, Institutions, ideologies
and values .
2. It provided inspiration for various social reform
movements such as Brahma Samaj, Arya samaj,
Sri Ramakrishna Mission, Saevodaya etc.
3. It has led a new style of life as western
influence made Indians to imitate the
western way of life and culture in several
aspects .
4. It brought about negative effects too. In
the process of imitation, Indians blindly
imitated and picked up deficiencies and
evil practices of the westrn people .
5. It leads to introduction of Industrialization,
urbanization and new institutions .
6. It introduces new judicial system on
the basis of principle of equality .
7. Scientifics innovation, establishment
of large scale industries, wider
network of transportation and
communication, new educational
system etc.
CONCLUSION
Westernization is a process of imitation of western
countries by non-western countries, whereby
societies come under or adopt the western culture .
It includes only external changes .
It is a sub process of Modernization .
