AGRICULTURE SECTOR PUNJAB, PAKISTAN

INTRODUCTION

• Agriculture is the vital sector of Pakistan’s economy.


• The economy of Punjab, Pakistan is one that is largely
based on agriculture and industry.
• Punjab is the largest province of Pakistan in terms
of population, and also has the largest and fastest
growing economy in the country compared to other
provinces.
• It accounts for 19.3% of the GDP in Pakistan(Pakistan economic survey 2019-
20)and employs 42.3%of the labor force of Pakistan . About 25% of Pakistan’s total
land area is under cultivation.
• It almost fetches 80% of the country’s total export earnings.
• 70% of national agricultural output is from Punjab.

During 2012-13, agriculture sector exhibited a growth of 3.3 percent against


growth of 3.5% of last year(Economic survey of Pakistan 2013), on the back of
positive growth in agriculture related sub sectors, Crops grew at 3.2 percent,
Livestock 3.7 percent, Forestry 0.1 percent and Fishing 0.7 percent.

IMPORTANCE OF AGRICULTURE SECTOR

 Reduction in poverty:
It has significant impact on rural development. It provides more jobs
to unemployed people. They are able to get basic services of life such as water supply,
sanitation, provision of health and education facilities.
 Supply of food:
Food is the first in basic necessities of the life, social provider of all
kind of food, wheat, rice, sugarcane, vegetables and fruits.
 Supply of labor force:
More than 44% of our labor force is directly involved in agriculture
sector, while 66.7% rural population is dependent on agriculture. This sector is major
source of supply of labor force to industrial sector.
 Source of national income:
It is the major contributor to Pakistan’s national income. Its
contribution to GDP is 24% in 2013-14.
