TITANIC
Introduction
The genre of the “Titanic” is a romance movie that ends in a tragedy. The blossom love affair
between Jack and Rose; the clock that symbolize the time of the Titanic’s faith and its
passengers; and the powerful ship considered “unsinkable.” All contributes to the “Titanic”
irony. The irony in Cal Hockley words “God himself could not sink this ship” is that he doesn’t
know the Titanic will strike an iceberg and sink. From the beginning through most of the
movie, the tone of the movie is joyful and celebration and towards of the end of the movie
changes to a dramatic tone.
The Titanic & Its History
Titanic, the “unsinkable” ship has an unexpected encounter with a deadly iceberg
and is the first exploration of a luxury travel and romanticized tragedy. The ship
“Titanic’s” whole name is “R.M.S. Titanic.” According to “National Geographic
Magazine”, “… because she carried mail for the crown (royalty), Titanic also bore
the honorary initials R.M.S., for Royal Mail Steamer.” In accordance with
livescience.com, Titanic was built by the White Star Line, which was a competitor
with another shipbuilding company, Conrad. Apparently, Titanic was built to show
up the competition. From the late nineteenth and beginning of twentieth century,
the ships were built and divided in two travel classes. First class was for the rich
people who were travelling for vacation and pleasure and, the other class for the
emigrants who were looking for a better life. According to “On the Water”, “… a
few wealthy – and immigrants by the millions – filled ocean liners in the late 1800s
and early 1900s. At the time, steamship lines did not try to attract the potential
travels in between.”
The Titanic & its History
The ship that changed everything is “Titanic”. Everyone wanted to be aboard of the luxurious
Titanic. The ship has first class, second class and third class. The first class was providing for the
rich people with an extravagant lifestyle at sea, having luxury restaurants and hotels on their
way to vacationing. The other classes were providing for the poor people on their way of
immigration for a better life. At 11:40pm on Sunday, April 14, 1912, Titanic navigate into the
history as the most famous vessels hit by an iceberg that ended in the tragedy on its very first
time on the sea. The “Titanic movie prove to be an innovative mode of the story telling when
the disaster happened of the ship and a success of a historical masterpiece. The movie
“Titanic” made by Cameron is special because he instills the history of the RMS Titanic and the
fiction of the characters since we don’t know for sure about each character if the events from
the movie really happened. He included the romance between Jack and Rose and the movie
was a global box office hit. From a different angle of view, Cameron did not limit the movie
only to its historical context but extended to romance and fiction by added fictional characters
to communicate with the audience and to drawn them into the movie.
Falling in Love
Cameron uses illustrations to create a special effect of the events happened at that time
in the movie Titanic. One of the examples in the movie “Titanic” is the clock present
everywhere. Among of those clock imagery scene, the one that I like the most is the
moment when after a fancy meal Jack is getting ready to leave and Rose does not want
Jack to leave. Jack gives Rose a hidden note asking for her to meet at the Clock on the
Grand Staircase. In Jack’s words written on the note: “Make it count – Meet me at the
clock.” Rose takes a deep breath as she climbs on the stairs and when Jack turns around,
the time is 9:00 o’clock. Jack looks handsome on his tuxedo, and it show the love that they share
for each other. There are more image surrounding the clock, and all of them it represents the
time in history when the romance happens between Jack and Rose and the faith of the “Titanic.”
reunite with Jack.
The making of “Titanic” movie uses a low and high lightning to create a realistic
image. The low key, and dark lightning in the movie, is taking when the ship begins
to sink to create a dramatic and realistic scene. It allows the audience to get different
emotional feeling about the scenes happening in the movie. The lighting is use in
different colors such as bright red, yellow and oranges to show the scenes in different
time of the day and weather as well as the characters emotions. The light also shows
the contrast between the two classes passengers. First class passengers have more
bright colors, rich colors of gold, burgundy, and sunlight to show the modern and
sophisticated life the rich people live their life. The film gives a strong voice to Rose
who she is forced to married with Cal, in an arrangement marriage by her mom
because he was coming from the same social class like her. In one scene Rose says:
“Outwardly, I was everything a well brought up girl should be. Inside, I was
screaming.” Also, the diamond necklace “The Heart of the Ocean” expressed Roses’
of feeling getting married with a man that she does not love, and her social status
becomes an inescapable condition.
It’s clear that the social expectation of Rose makes her feel trapped and without
voice. On the other hand, Roses learns about life on the other side from Jack, but
when her mom forbids her from seeing Jack. When Jack catches Rose’s eye the
scene uses foreshadowing to show how they were looking at each other and to
connect the spark between them.
For the lower classes passengers have
very little lightning and sunlight, use pale,
beige and brown to show the aspect of
the poor people’s life.
On April 15, 1912, the Titanic sank at 2:20am. Because of the Titanic tragedy, ships now are
expected to have enough lifeboats for everyone on board, and hopefully a tragedy like this
will never happened again.
The movie “Titanic” amazed me due to the fact how realistic the movie looks; and in
addition, the feelings, and sensation that give to the audience from the love scene of Jack
and Rose to the sinking ship drama. From the sounds effect, tone and through the lighting, all
have an important part in portraying the movie and it didn’t stop to impressed me from its
beginning to the end.
