Lesson 2: Giving the Place Value and Value of 4- to
5-digit Numbers
• Let’s Explore!
In a Science class, the teacher mentioned that the Earth’s
diameter is about twelve thousand, seven hundred forty-two
kilometers. It is written in number symbol as 12 742. Determine
the place value and value of each digit.
Use the place value chart.
What is the value of each digit?
1 ten thousands means 1x10 000= 10 000
2 thousands means 2 × 1000 = 2000
7 hundreds means 7 × 100 = 700
4 tens means 2 × 10 = 20
Adding all the values will give us 12 742.
How can we determine the place value and value of the digits of a number?
