Course Professional Academic English (PAE) is a required course for all HYU students that develop
Description students’ academic presentation and writing skills using major-related content. Instruction will
focus on the concepts and strategies needed in order to both organize and deliver a
presentation, along with informal and formal opportunities to practice them. Students will also
learn to improve their academic writing through assignments that require the demonstration of
key writing principles as well as beginning research and citation practices.

Course Presentation Outcomes


Outcomes 1. Students will be able to plan, prepare, and presents on a topic relating to their majors
2. Students will be able to present, demonstrating a proficiency of:
a) Presentation Skills (eye contact, gestures, posture, voice)
b) Language skills (explain charts/graphs, how to take questions, power of language)
c) Visuals (PowerPoint and other visual aids)
d) Teamwork
Writing Outcomes
1. Students will be able to write a basic academic essay on a topic relating to their majors
2. Students will learn about:
e) Structure of paragraphs and essays
f) Principles of good writing (sentence & language variety, cohesion & coherence, using specific
examples)
g) Mechanics & formatting
h) Research, plagiarism, and citation

We will start with writing and then do the presentations


Assignment Essay (20%)
Requirements • Topic: A problem/solution source based essay on a topic relating to students’ majors.
• Outline & First Draft Required
• Length: 5 paragraphs (500-800 words)
• 1 short intro, 1 problem body paragraph, 1 solution body paragraph, 1 counterargument/
refutation paragraph and 1 concluding paragraph
• Use 2 sources in the problem paragraph, use 2 sources in the solution paragraph, use 1 source
in 3rd body paragraph
• Key Areas Assessed: Content, Organization, Writing Style, Citation, Prewrite

Presentation #1 (20%)
Presentation • Topic: Compare/Contrast on a topic relating to students’ majors
Assignments • Include two graphs / charts.
• Charts and graphs should include title, label and source in English
• Use language related to graphs/charts as outlined in textbook.
• Length: 4 minutes 30 seconds - 5 minutes 30 seconds (individual presentation)
• Visual Aids: Must use PPT (or Prezi)
• Key Areas Assessed: Presentation Skills, Visuals, Content, Structure

Presentation #2 (30%)
• Topic: Problem/solution source based presentation on a topic related to students’ majors
• Length: 4 minutes 30 seconds - 5 minutes 30 seconds (individual presentation)
• Power language
• Visual Aids: PPT (or Prezi)
• Key Areas Assessed: Presentation Skills, Content, Structure, Visuals,

Your first task is to choose a Problem/Solution topic for your research essay.
 It must be related to your major.
 It must be a solution that has been researched, implemented and, proven successful.
Attendance 1. Students must attend at least 2/3 (20 classes) of the course to take the exam for that particular course.
and - Unexcused absence will lose 1 point from attendance and 1 point from participation.
- Excused absence will lose 0.5 point from participation.
Lateness
- Up to 10 minutes late will lose 0.5 point
Policy - Up to 20 minutes late will lose 1 point
  - More than 30 minutes late will be considered as an absence
- Participation points will be deducted for such things as excessive use of cell phone, speaking Korean
excessively, not paying attention when the teacher is talking, interrupting the classroom, and not having
your textbook.
2. Attendance points will not be deducted for excused absence accepted by Hanyang University
Attendance Regulations Article 35(3) and Article 23(3) (e.g., military obligation, family death, female
menstruation, teaching practicum, participation in sports tournaments for student athletes, early
employment, other unavoidable circumstances approved by the student’s College Dean).
3. Excused absence will be accepted ONLY when students submit the ‘Confirmation of Absence (
공결확인서 )’ form and absence related documents.
4. The ‘Confirmation of Absence ( 공결확인서 )’ form is issued by the student’s department. Excused
absence is determined by the student’s department NOT by the CEEC Professor.

The bottom line is: If you attend class every day and
try not to be late, you will be fine 
