Seismic Analysis of Steel Frames With Different Types

The document summarizes work done on a project analyzing steel frames with different bracing configurations. It discusses introducing bracing types, modeling unbraced and diagonally braced frames in Staad Pro software, and analyzing the results which showed the braced frame had less roof displacement. Next steps include modeling other bracing configurations and further analysis. The majority of the planned work is complete.

INTRODUCTION

• What is bracing
• Function of bracing
• Types of bracing
• Why steel bracing
• Advantages of braced structure
WHAT IS BRACING ?? 4

• A bracing is a structural system commonly used in structures subject to lateral

loads such as wind and seismic pressure.
• The members in a braced frame are generally made of structural steel, which
can work effectively both in tension and compression.
FUNCTION OF BRACING 5

• A bracing system serves to stabilize the main girders during

construction

• It also distributes the load and

• Diagonal bracing also prevent the building from twisting under

the action of wind
TYPES OF BRACING 6

There are different types of bracing based on there placement

and requirement for load bearing

• X-bracing
• V bracing
• Inverted V bracing
• K bracing
• Diagonal bracing
WHY STEEL BRACING ? 7

Main reasons to use steel for bracing

• Light weight and reduced foundation cost.
• Durable , Long Lasting and Recyclable.
• Easier to modify and reinforce if required.
• Fabrication off-site possible.
• On site erection is a time saving process
• Reduced construction time & less seasonal effect.
ADVANTAGES OF BRACED STRUCTURE 8
.

• Reduction in lateral displacement is a major advantage.

• Braced frames resist the wind and seismic forces, much more than non-
braced buildings.

• Steel bracing is economical, easy to erect, occupies less space and has
flexibility to design for meeting the required strength and stiffness.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE
OBJECTIVE OF PROJECT 10

The specific project objectives are:-

• To study the performance of steel frames with unbraced and braced

configurations

• To study the performance of various types of bracing configurations X, V

Diagonal. and comparison between there performance

• Conclusion from the above two works and reason.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Literature Review 12

• Khatib al. (1988)

 The failure mode generally observed in special moment resisting frames with
bracing system is fracture of bracings at the locations of local buckling or plastic
hinges.

 Significant story drift can occur at a single story and this research shows how
the failure mode occurs and how the failure is concentrated entirely on single
floor.
13
• Seismic response of Steel braced reinforced concrete frames by
K.G.Vishwanath (2010)

 A four storey building was taken in seismic zone 4 according to IS 1893:2002 .

The performance of the building is evaluated according to story drift.

 Then the study is extended to eight story and twelve story.

 He found out X type of steel bracing were the most efficient.

14

• Christopoulus.

 An advanced cross bracing system has been used in University of Toronto

called (SCEDs) Self centering energy dissipating frames.

 They also dissipate energy, but they have self centering capabilities which
reduce residual building deformation after major seismic events.

METHODOLOGY 15

• Seismic behavior of steel frames with various concentric bracings and eccentric bracing

• Modeling the steel frame with various different bracing by computer software Staad pro.

• Carry out Time History analysis on the models and arrive at conclusion.
16
CONTI…….

• Design and analysis will be based on IS-1893-2002.

• The analysis will be done using the software Staad Pro.

• History Analysis will be on G+10 building.

• Comparison between braced and unbraced configuration

• A comparison between different types of in different types of braced

TIME HISTORY ANALYSIS 17

• To perform this analysis, a representative earthquake time history is required for

a structure being evaluated.

• In this method, the mathematical model of the building is subjected to

accelerations from earthquake records that represent the expected earthquake at
the base of the structure.

• The method consists of a step- by- step direct integration over a time interval

WORK DONE
19
Step 1:-

• Work:-Theoretical knowledge about bracing

• Status:-Completed

• Duration:-It took around 4-5 days to get basic idea about bracing and related
things
20
Step 2:-

• Work:-Staad pro software use

• Status:-Completed

• Duration:- We completed this work in 2 week i.e. around October 3rd week.
Step 3:- 21

• Work:-Making the structure in Staad pro

• Status:- Completed.

• Duration:-Around 2-3 days

diagonal-Braced
Unbraced
Step 4:- 22

• Work:-Analysing the result

• Status:-Complete

• Duration:-4-5 days
23

Conclusion

• Unbraced structure shows greater roof displacement

than the braced structure

• Bracing of structure can reduces roof displacement

24
Maximum seismic force exerted by the structure analysis
25
Step 5:-

• Work:-Structures with other bracing configuration and analysis

• Status:-Yet to be done
26
SUMMARY

• We started the project by learning about the basic knowledge, then learning the
Staad Pro software, after that we made an unbraced structure and a diagonal
braced structure and then analyzed the result.

• 70% of the work in terms of time required is completed and rest 30% of the
work will be done soon.
